Forklift Seatbelt And Interlock Check
Daily pre-operation inspection procedure to verify the integrity of the seatbelt, seatbelt retractor, seat presence switch, and transmission interlock system on counterbalance forklifts. This SOP meets WorkSafeBC Part 24 and CSA B335-15 requirements.
To reduce the risk of operator ejection, crush injuries, and loss‑of‑control incidents by ensuring the seatbelt and interlock system function as designed. A properly working seatbelt interlock prevents the forklift from moving unless the operator is seated and belted, and automatically stops the engine or transmission when the operator leaves the seat without unbuckling.
This procedure applies to all counterbalance, reach, and order‑picker forklifts operated within the facility that are equipped with operator‑presence sensing and seatbelt interlock systems. It covers visual inspection of webbing and hardware, functional testing of the belt locking mechanism, verification of anchor bolt torque, and validation of seat switch and interlock operation. Forklifts with identified defects must be taken out of service and repaired before next operation.
- Lockout/Tagout: Ensure the forklift is turned off, key removed, and parking brake engaged before inspecting seatbelt webbing or anchor bolts. Never reach into the retractor mechanism while the engine is running.
- PPE: Wear safety glasses and steel‑toed boots during inspection. Gloves recommended when handling frayed webbing or sharp bracket edges.
- Crush Hazard: When testing the interlock, keep hands and feet clear of the mast and wheels. Use a spotter if the forklift is positioned near racking or other equipment.
- Forklift pre‑shift inspection checklist (paper or SafeDesk digital form)
- Torque wrench (capable of ≥ 45 N·m, to verify anchor bolt spec)
- Pen or mobile device for recording results
- Tag‑out tags for any deficient equipment
- Manufacturer’s service manual for specific torque values (if available)
