Forklift Seatbelt And Interlock Check

Daily pre-operation inspection procedure to verify the integrity of the seatbelt, seatbelt retractor, seat presence switch, and transmission interlock system on counterbalance forklifts. This SOP meets WorkSafeBC Part 24 and CSA B335-15 requirements.

Purpose

To reduce the risk of operator ejection, crush injuries, and loss‑of‑control incidents by ensuring the seatbelt and interlock system function as designed. A properly working seatbelt interlock prevents the forklift from moving unless the operator is seated and belted, and automatically stops the engine or transmission when the operator leaves the seat without unbuckling.

Scope

This procedure applies to all counterbalance, reach, and order‑picker forklifts operated within the facility that are equipped with operator‑presence sensing and seatbelt interlock systems. It covers visual inspection of webbing and hardware, functional testing of the belt locking mechanism, verification of anchor bolt torque, and validation of seat switch and interlock operation. Forklifts with identified defects must be taken out of service and repaired before next operation.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout: Ensure the forklift is turned off, key removed, and parking brake engaged before inspecting seatbelt webbing or anchor bolts. Never reach into the retractor mechanism while the engine is running.
  • PPEPPE: Wear safety glasses and steel‑toed boots during inspection. Gloves recommended when handling frayed webbing or sharp bracket edges.
  • CRUSHCrush Hazard: When testing the interlock, keep hands and feet clear of the mast and wheels. Use a spotter if the forklift is positioned near racking or other equipment.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Approach and identify. Walk to the forklift. Verify the forklift is turned off, parking brake engaged, and keys removed from ignition before starting inspection.
2 Inspect seatbelt webbing and hardware. Visually examine the entire seatbelt webbing for cuts, fraying, burns, or chemical damage. Check the buckle, latch plate, and retractor for cracks, deformation, or corrosion. Pull the belt fully out and release to confirm smooth retraction.
3 Test seatbelt locking mechanism. With the belt extended, jerk it sharply forward to simulate a sudden load. The belt must lock and hold firmly. Repeat the test with the belt at different extension lengths. If the belt does not lock, tag the forklift and remove from service.
4 Check seatbelt anchor points. Examine the floor anchors and the seat-mounting bracket where the seatbelt retractor and buckle attach. Ensure bolts are tight (using torque wrench to manufacturer spec if available). No cracks or deformation on brackets.
5 Test seat interlock switch. Sit in the operator seat. Buckle the seatbelt. With the ignition on (key in) and the parking brake released, attempt to shift the transmission into gear. The interlock should disallow travel when the seatbelt is unbuckled. Unbuckle the belt and verify that the transmission drops to neutral or the engine cuts to idle (per manufacturer design). If interlock fails, do not operate the forklift.
6 Test seat presence switch. With the engine running and seatbelt unbuckled, lift your weight off the seat for at least three seconds. The engine should stop or reduce to idle and the transmission should disengage. If the forklift remains operable, the seat presence switch is faulty and requires immediate service.
7 Document results and report defects. Record all inspection findings on the daily pre-shift log (paper or SafeDesk digital audit). If any component failed inspection, complete a Lockout/Tagout on the forklift, place an 'Out of Service' tag on the steering wheel, and notify the supervisor or maintenance lead immediately.
