Purpose

To establish a uniform safety procedure for the use of pneumatic nailers, reducing the risk of unintentional discharge, fastener ricochet, and hand-injury events. This SOP defines the mandatory trigger selection protocol—contact actuation (bump fire) versus sequential actuation—and enforces the lockout/tagout, PPE, and pre-operational inspection requirements that every operator must follow before, during, and after use.

Scope

This procedure applies to all personnel operating pneumatic nailers, staplers, and pin nailers on any Ryxen-managed job site or shop floor. It covers trigger selection criteria, daily inspection, safe handling, clearing jams, and post-shift storage. Subcontractors and visitors must acknowledge this SOP before tool access is granted.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout (LOTO): Disconnect the air supply and bleed residual pressure before performing any maintenance, clearing a jam, or swapping the trigger assembly. Verify zero energy with a manual triggering test.
  • PPEPPE: Approved safety glasses with side shields are mandatory at all times. Hearing protection required when multiple tools operate simultaneously. Cut-resistant gloves highly recommended.
  • TRIGTrigger Selection Mandate: Contact actuation (bump fire) is prohibited in overhead work, on ladders, and for any fastener location near hands/body. Sequential (full‑sequential) trigger is the default safe mode unless a signed Supervisor Waiver is in effect.
  • ZONEWork Area: Maintain a minimum 15‑foot safety zone. Ensure all bystanders wear eye protection. Never carry a loaded tool with your finger on the trigger.

  • Compressed air supply regulated to manufacturer's PSI range
  • Appropriate fasteners (nails, staples, pins) per tool spec

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Pre‑Operational Inspection: Visually inspect the nailer body, air fitting, trigger guard, and nosepiece. Verify no cracks, missing parts, or damaged safety contact element. Check that the air hose whip check is present and the quick‑connect is clean.
2 Trigger Selection Confirmation: Identify the current trigger type – sequential (full‑sequential) or contact (bump‑fire). If contact actuation is installed, confirm a signed Supervisor Waiver is in effect. Otherwise, swap to sequential trigger assembly following manufacturer instructions.
3 Connect Air Supply: Attach the air hose to the tool. Turn on the compressor and adjust the regulator to the PSI range specified on the nailer’s nameplate (typically 70–120 PSI). Do not exceed maximum rating.
4 Load Fasteners: Open the magazine. Load the correct fastener size and type per tool specification. Close the magazine securely. Never load fasteners while the tool is connected to air.
5 Safe Handling & Operation: Keep your finger off the trigger until the nosepiece is pressed firmly against the work surface. Use sequential trigger for all overhead, ladder, or close‑quarters work. For permitted bump‑fire operation, maintain a secure two‑hand hold and never double‑fire on the same spot.
6 Clearing a Jam: Disconnect the air line. Depress the nosepiece to release residual pressure. Open the jam‑clear hatch or nosepiece. Remove the jammed fastener using a needle‑nose pliers – never use the tool to clear jams. Reassemble and test by pressing the nosepiece against scrap wood before resuming production.
7 Post‑Shift Shutdown: Disconnect the air supply. Actuate the tool at least twice against a safe surface to bleed residual air pressure. Remove all remaining fasteners from the magazine. Wipe down the tool and lubricate per manufacturer schedule. Apply a lockout/tagout device if the tool remains in a shared inventory.
8 Documentation & Reporting: Complete the daily pneumatic tool inspection log (include date, operator name, tool serial, trigger type in use, and any anomalies). Report any cracked housing, trigger guard damage, or frequent misfires to the supervisor immediately.
