Purpose

To establish a safe, repeatable method for using compressed air as a cleaning tool. Improper use can cause eye injuries, hearing damage, embedding of debris, and equipment contamination. This SOP standardizes the required equipment, pressure regulation, and personal protective measures to eliminate those risks.

Scope

This procedure applies to all personnel in fabrication, assembly, maintenance, and janitorial roles who use compressed air for cleaning tasks. It covers fixed and portable air lines, hand‑held blow‑off operations, and cleaning of metal, wood, plastic, and composite materials. Excluded: system‑level pneumatic line purging and automated blow‑off stations (see separate SOPs).

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOPerform lockout/tagout on the air compressor or branch line before connecting, disconnecting, or making repairs to any compressed air system component.
  • PPEWear impact‑rated safety glasses with side shields (ANSI Z87.1 or CSA Z94.3) and a face shield when blowing debris that could ricochet. Additional hearing protection is mandatory when noise exceeds 85 dBA.
  • PRESNever exceed 30 psi (207 kPa) at the nozzle. Higher pressure can cause air embolism, hearing loss, or propel chips at lethal velocity. Verify with a regulator gauge calibrated within the last 12 months.
  • NOZZOnly use OSHA‑compliant safety nozzles with dead‑end pressure relief (e.g., tapered “safety air gun” style). Never use a direct‑blow pipe, rubber hose without a nozzle, or any modified tip.
  • AREAClear all bystanders from a 2‑m (6.5‑ft) radius. Post warning signage if the area is near aisles or workstations. Never direct air at loose clothing, long hair, or jewelry.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Compressed air source (shop air or portable compressor) with pressure regulator and gauge
  • OSHA‑compliant safety air gun / nozzle (dead‑end pressure relief type)
  • Air hose (rated for working pressure, free of cuts and abrasions)
  • Impact‑rated safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1 / CSA Z94.3)
  • Face shield (for high‑debris tasks)
  • Hearing protection (earplugs or earmuffs, NRR ≥ 25 dB)
  • Lockout/tagout kit (if servicing the system)
  • Pressure gauge calibration sticker (last calibration date visible)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Inspect equipment. Visually examine the air hose, fittings, and nozzle for cuts, kinks, cracks, or loose connections. Verify the pressure regulator reads ≤ 30 psi and that the nozzle is an approved safety type. Do not proceed if any defect is found – report and tag for repair.
2 Attach the safety nozzle. Securely connect the safety air gun to the hose using a quick‑connect or threaded fitting. Pull the trigger briefly to ensure no air leaks and that the dead‑end relief works (air stops when the nozzle tip is blocked).
3 Don PPE. Put on safety glasses with side shields; add a face shield if debris is heavy or sharp. Insert hearing protection. Ensure clothing is close‑fitting and hair is tied back.
4 Clear the zone. Verbally alert anyone within 2 m (“Air blast!”). Verify no one is standing directly in the line of fire. Remove any loose items (rags, chips) that could be blown into moving machinery.
5 Perform the blow‑off. Hold the nozzle firmly with both hands if needed. Direct the air stream at a 45° angle to the surface, sweeping from the top downward. Keep the nozzle tip at least 15 cm (6 in) from the workpiece to prevent embedding. Never cup the nozzle with your hand or direct air toward any person.
6 Post‑operation check. Release the trigger and bleed residual pressure. Coil the hose properly. Report any equipment anomalies. If debris entered sensitive mechanisms, notify maintenance immediately. Log the cleaning task in the daily inspection record.
