Purpose

The purpose of this SOP is to establish uniform procedures for safely selecting, mounting, and securing workpieces using drill press vises and clamps. Proper clamping prevents workpiece rotation, lift-off, or ejection during drilling – eliminating the most common cause of drill press injuries and tool breakage. This policy ensures compliance with CSA Z432 (Safeguarding of Machinery) and WorkSafeBC OHS Part 12 (Tools, Machinery and Equipment).

Scope

This procedure applies to all operators, apprentices, and maintenance personnel working on vertical drill presses (floor or bench models) in the fabrication shop and metalworking area. It covers standard screw vises, quick-action vises, step blocks, strap clamps, and C-clamps. Excluded: magnetic chucks, rotary tables, angle plates, and custom fixture tooling. Any workpiece that cannot be securely held by these methods must be evaluated by a supervisor for alternate fixturing.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout / Tagout: Before installing, adjusting, or removing any vise or clamp, the drill press must be locked out and verified zero-energy. Unauthorized startup while hands are near the clamping hardware can cause crushing or entrapment injuries.
  • PPEPersonal Protective Equipment: Approved safety glasses with side shields and hearing protection are mandatory. Roll up sleeves, tuck in ties, remove jewellery, and secure long hair. No gloves near rotating spindles or vises.
  • CLAMPWorkpiece Stability: Always verify the vise jaws or clamp pads make full contact with the workpiece. Soft jaws are required for irregular or thin parts. Never leave the clamping mechanism loose; re-check after the spindle is engaged.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Drill press vise (screw type or quick-action) with matching T-bolts and nuts
  • Step blocks, strap clamps, and C-clamps (various sizes)
  • Drift pin or soft mallet for aligning vise on table T-slots
  • Soft jaws (aluminum, copper, or plastic) for finished or thin workpieces
  • Cutting fluid / coolant and brush or spray applicator
  • Deburring tool (file or countersink) after drilling

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lock out the drill press. Authorize the machine and verify zero energy using the lockout/tagout procedure. Remove any existing clamps or debris from the table.
2 Select the clamping method. Choose the vise or clamp set based on workpiece dimensions and shape. Use a machinist’s vise for rectangular stock, step blocks with strap clamps for flat plates, and C-clamps for small or irregular pieces. Soft jaws are mandatory for finished surfaces.
3 Mount the vise or clamps to the table. Insert T-bolts into the table T-slots and slide the vise base over the bolts. Place the nuts and tighten hand-tight only. Use a drift pin to align the vise parallel to the spindle axis if needed. For strap clamps, position step blocks to match workpiece height.
4 Position and clamp the workpiece. Place the workpiece in the vise jaws or under the clamp pads. Tighten the vise screw or clamp nuts progressively – first lightly, then firmly. Ensure full contact of jaws or clamp feet with the workpiece. Re-tighten with a wrench, but do not over-torque (can distort thin workpieces).
5 Verify clearance and security. Rotate the spindle by hand (with the machine still locked out) to confirm the drill bit will not contact the vise jaws, clamp hardware, or table. Adjust clamping height or relocate the vise if necessary. Give the workpiece a firm push – it must not shift.
6 Apply coolant and drill. Unlock the machine and set correct spindle speed and feed rate for the material. Apply cutting fluid to the drill point. Start the spindle and feed the bit into the workpiece using steady, controlled pressure. Keep hands clear of the rotating area.
7 Retract and remove workpiece. After drilling, retract the spindle and stop the machine. Wait for full spindle stop. Loosen the clamp or vise and remove the workpiece. Deburr the hole edge if required.
8 Clean and store. Remove vise, clamps, and T-bolts from the table. Clean table surface and tools with a brush and rag. Return all clamping hardware to the designated storage area. Lock out the machine again if maintenance is needed.
