Purpose

To establish a consistent method for placing and maintaining anti-fatigue mats at standing workstations. Correct mat placement reduces the risk of musculoskeletal injuries caused by prolonged standing on hard surfaces and ensures compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.

Scope

This SOP applies to all workstations within the facility where employees stand for two or more consecutive hours. It covers anti-fatigue mats made of nitrile rubber or vinyl, with a beveled edge profile. Excluded are mats in wet areas requiring specialized drainage mats (see SOP-WetAreaMats).

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOEnsure the workstation area is clear of electrical cords and obstructions before placing the mat. Lock out any powered equipment that might be moved during mat placement.
  • PPEWear slip-resistant work boots or shoes. Use cut-resistant gloves when handling mats with sharp edges or when trimming mats to size.
  • SLIPInspect the floor surface for oil, water, or debris before laying the mat. Clean spills immediately. Do not stack mats.

  • Anti-fatigue mat (appropriate size and thickness: 0.75" to 1" for high-traffic areas)

  • Non-slip double-sided tape (if required for high-traffic areas)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Perform a workspace assessment: Identify the area where the operator stands most frequently. Mark a rectangular zone 24 inches wide by 30 inches long (standard) or larger for wider stances.
2 Select the correct mat: Choose a mat with a beveled edge, slip-resistant top surface, and thickness appropriate for the floor type (0.75" standard). Ensure the mat is large enough to cover the entire standing zone plus a 6-inch allowance beyond the work area.
3 Prepare the floor: Sweep and mop the floor area to remove debris and grease. Allow to dry completely. For concrete floors, apply a thin layer of degreaser if needed.
4 Position the mat: Lay the mat in the designated zone, ensuring the beveled edges face outward to create a safe transition. Check that the mat does not interfere with chair casters (if sit-stand workstation) or door swings.
5 Secure the mat (if required): For high-traffic areas or where the mat may shift, apply double-sided tape along the underside edges. Press firmly and check for any curling.
6 Test the workstation: The operator should step onto the mat and perform typical movements. Ensure the mat does not slide and that the beveled edge does not cause tripping. Adjust position if needed.
7 Document and label: Record mat placement in the workstation log. Affix a "Mat Installed" sticker with inspection date. Finally, train the operator on daily mat inspection (see Safety Inspection Checklist).
