Warehouse Racking Structural Safety Deflection Inspection Checklist
A comprehensive, step-by-step procedure for inspecting pallet racking systems for deflection, damage, and structural integrity. This SOP ensures compliance with CSA A344 and WorkSafeBC regulations, reducing the risk of rack collapse and worker injury.
This procedure establishes a systematic method for detecting structural deflection and damage in pallet racking systems. Regular inspections prevent catastrophic collapse, protect inventory, and ensure worker safety in compliance with provincial regulations. Documented inspections also provide legal traceability and insurance support.
Applies to all adjustable pallet racking, drive-in racking, and push-back rack systems within the facility. Includes upright frames, beams, bracing, anchor bolts, baseplates, and beam connectors. Excludes automated storage/retrieval systems (covered under separate CMMS SOP). Inspections are to be performed monthly with a full annual engineering assessment.
- Lockout/tagout all powered material handling equipment (forklifts, VNA trucks) in the aisle under inspection. Verify with a zero-energy state.
- Wear hard hat, steel-toed boots, high-visibility vest, and safety glasses. When inspecting beams above 2.4 m, use a fall arrest harness and approved ladder or scissor lift.
- Erect temporary barricades or safety cones to prevent entry by untrained personnel while inspection is in progress.
- Remove all product from the rack section being inspected if beam connection or baseplate integrity is questionable. Do not work under loaded racks with known damage.
- Plumb bob or laser level (accuracy ±0.5 mm/m)
- Straightedge (2 m / 6 ft minimum)
- Tape measure (metric and imperial graduations)
- Torque wrench (calibrated, with rack manufacturer bolt specs)
- Inspection form (paper or digital tablet with SafeDesk app)
- Red paint marker or warning tags for damaged areas
- Safety harness and lanyard (if elevated work)
- Manufacturer load placards and rack layout drawings
