Purpose

To ensure the air float table blower system operates at peak efficiency by removing accumulated wood dust, chips, and debris from the intake filter. A clean filter maintains adequate static pressure for workpiece floating, reduces blower motor amp draw, and prevents thermal overload shutdowns during extended cutting cycles.

Scope

This SOP applies to all beam saws equipped with an air float table system (e.g., Schelling, Homag, SCM) in the millwork, panel processing, and solid surface fabrication facility. It covers the scheduled cleaning of the blower intake filter assembly only — not the blower motor, the table plenum, or the pneumatic controls. Perform this procedure monthly or whenever the table floating pressure drops below 0.5 psi at the outermost table zone.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTO Lockout/tagout the beam saw main electrical disconnect and the blower motor disconnect. Verify zero energy state with a qualified electrician using a contact voltage tester before approaching the filter housing.
  • PPE Wear safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1), N95 respirator, and cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A4) when handling the filter media and disassembling the filter housing. Fine wood dust is a respiratory irritant.
  • FIRE Fine wood dust is combustible. Ensure the work area is free of ignition sources. Keep a Class K extinguisher within 15 ft of the blower compartment during cleaning.
  • LIFT The blower housing cover may be heavy (>20 lb). Use two-person lift or a mechanical assist when removing the cover to avoid back strain or pinch injuries.

  • 10 mm socket wrench and ratchet
  • Flat-head screwdriver (medium, 6 mm tip)
  • Soft-bristle brush (2-inch, nylon)
  • Compressed air gun with nozzle — regulated to ≤30 psi
  • Filter replacement (pleated polyester, P/N: BS‑AFT‑101)
  • HEPA-rated vacuum (Class H, with brush attachment)
  • Disposable lint-free rags (pack of 5)
  • Zip-ties (4-inch, nylon) — 4 pcs
  • Magnetic tray (for fasteners)
  • Torque wrench (in-lb, range 5–15 N·m)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout. Lockout/tagout the beam saw main disconnect and the dedicated blower motor disconnect. Verify zero energy with a contact voltage tester at the blower housing. Only a qualified electrician may remove LOTO.
2 Access filter housing. Using a 10 mm socket, remove the filter housing cover bolts. Place all fasteners in a magnetic tray. Carefully lift off the cover — use a two-person carry if >20 lb. Set the cover on a clean, dry surface.
3 Inspect filter media. Visually inspect the pleated polyester filter for tears, holes, or excessive dust loading. Shine a flashlight through the clean side. If the media is torn or the pressure drop exceeds 1.5 inWC at rated flow, replace the filter. Record condition on the PM log.
4 Vacuum (dirty side). With the filter still seated in the housing, gently vacuum the upstream (dirty) side using the HEPA vacuum with a brush attachment. Move in overlapping passes; do not press hard enough to deform the pleats. Capture all coarse dust and chips.
5 Brush pleats. Using the soft-bristle brush, dislodge fine dust from the pleats working from the clean side outward. Angle the brush to follow the pleat direction. Brush each pleat individually — avoid cross-contamination by brushing from clean to dirty.
6 Compressed air blow. Using compressed air regulated to ≤30 psi, blow from the clean side outward at a 45° angle. Hold the nozzle 6 inches from the media. Work each pleat from top to bottom. Do not exceed 30 psi — higher pressure can damage the media.
7 Final vacuum. Vacuum the dirty side again to capture dislodged fine dust. Inspect the media under direct light — if any debris remains between pleats, repeat steps 5–6. Wipe the housing interior with a lint-free rag.
8 Reinstall filter. Place the clean (or new) filter into the housing, ensuring the gasket seats evenly around the perimeter. Reinstall the cover and torque bolts to 8 N·m in a star pattern. Secure any loose wiring or tubing with zip-ties.
9 Verify operation. Remove LOTO, restart the blower, and let it run for 2 minutes. Place a 4-inch diameter disc (approx. 1 lb weight) on the table surface — the disc should float with 0.5 psi supply at the outermost zone. If the disc does not float, check for blockages in the plenum or blower inlet.
