Purpose

To establish a repeatable procedure for testing, measuring, and replacing solenoid valve coils on industrial edgebanders. Solenoid coils control the pneumatic actuation of glue applicators, pressure rollers, and edge-trimming carriages. A failed coil causes inconsistent glue flow, poor edge adhesion, or complete station lockout. This SOP ensures coils are verified at 24 VDC nominal, that winding resistance falls within OEM tolerances (typically 24–48 Ω), and that insulation integrity exceeds 1 MΩ before returning the machine to service.

Scope

Applies to all solenoid valve coils on pneumatic manifolds feeding the glue application head, pressure roller cylinders, top/bottom trim units, and corner rounding stations on edgebanders manufactured by IMA-Schelling, SCM, Biesse, Homag, and similar brands. Covers both normally open and normally closed 24 VDC solenoid configurations. Does not cover proportional valves, servo-driven actuators, or 120 VAC/240 VAC coils — those require a separate SOP. This procedure is intended for qualified industrial maintenance technicians with electrical safety training.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout is mandatory. Isolate the edgebander at the main electrical disconnect. Verify zero energy with a rated contact volt tester. Do not rely solely on panel-mounted disconnects — lock and tag the branch feeder.
  • PPEWear safety glasses (CSA Z94.3) and heat-resistant gloves (EN 407) when handling coils near the glue pot — surface temperatures can exceed 150 °C. Remove all jewellery and secure loose clothing.
  • ARCArc flash hazard. The pneumatic cabinet may contain exposed 24 VDC bus bars that can sustain an arc in the presence of conductive dust. Use only insulated screwdrivers rated for 1000 V. Keep combustible dust (wood fines) clear of the work area.
  • HOTHot surfaces. The glue applicator and adjacent valve manifold can remain hot for 30+ minutes after machine shutdown. Allow the system to cool to below 60 °C before handling any metal surfaces near the glue station.
  • PRESDepressurize the pneumatic system. Close the main compressed-air ball valve and actuate the solenoid valve manually (via the HMI or a 24 VDC test pulse) to bleed residual pressure from the cylinder lines before disconnecting any fittings.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Digital multimeter — auto-ranging, True RMS, rated CAT III / 600 V minimum (Fluke 87V or equivalent)
  • Lockout/tagout kit — padlock, hasp, danger tag (OSHA 1910.147 / CSA Z460 compliant)
  • Flat-blade screwdriver — 3 mm tip for terminal-block connections
  • Phillips screwdriver — #1 for coil retainer screws
  • Terminal-block screwdriver — 2.5 mm slotted for Deutsch/M12 connector pins
  • Replacement 24 VDC solenoid coil — OEM part number verified against machine BOM (e.g., Festo MSEB-3-24-DC or SMC VXZ-24-1/8)
  • Isopropyl alcohol 99% and lint-free wipes — for cleaning armature tube and connector surfaces
  • Heat-resistant gloves — EN 407 rated, with grip
  • Safety glasses — CSA Z94.3 / ANSI Z87.1
  • Small magnet — for ferrite-core verification (if applicable)
  • Contact volt tester — rated CAT III / 1000 V (for zero-energy verification)
  • Torque screwdriver — 1.5 N·m range

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lock out and verify zero energy. Turn the edgebander main disconnect switch to OFF. Apply a personal padlock and a danger tag. Use your contact volt tester to confirm zero voltage phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground at the solenoid manifold power feed. Do not proceed until all three phases read 0 VAC.
2 Locate the target valve. Open the pneumatic/electrical cabinet. Identify the solenoid valve manifold — it is typically mounted near the glue pot or on the rear panel of the pressure-roller section. Trace the compressed-air line from the cylinder back to the valve body to confirm which coil you need to test. Record the valve position number and the machine location in your maintenance log.
3 Disconnect and inspect the coil connector. Grip the Deutsch or M12 connector body (not the wires) and pull straight back to disengage. Inspect the pins for corrosion, bent pins, or blackened contacts. Check the rubber seal for cracking or compression set. If the connector shows signs of moisture ingress, clean with isopropyl alcohol and replace the seal before proceeding.
4 Measure coil resistance. Set your multimeter to Ω (ohms), 200 Ω range. Place the red probe on pin 1, black probe on pin 2 of the coil. A healthy 24 VDC solenoid coil reads between 24 Ω and 48 Ω at 20 °C ambient. A reading of OL (open circuit) or less than 10 Ω (shorted turn) indicates a failed coil — replace it immediately. Record the measured value in your CMMS entry.
5 Perform insulation resistance check. Switch your multimeter to the highest resistance range (200 kΩ or MΩ range). Place one probe on either coil pin and the other probe on the valve body’s ground stud or unpainted metal surface. The reading must exceed 1 MΩ. If it reads below 1 MΩ, the winding insulation has broken down — the coil must be replaced to avoid a short-to-ground fault that could trip the PLC output card.
6 Check coil-to-armature alignment. Loosen the two Phillips screws on the coil retainer bracket. Slide the coil off the armature tube by pulling straight upward. Wipe the tube with a lint-free wipe dampened with isopropyl alcohol to remove carbon dust and oxidation. Slide the coil back on ensuring it seats fully — a gap of more than 1 mm between coil face and valve body reduces magnetic force by approximately 15 %. Tighten retainer screws to 1.5 N·m using a torque screwdriver.
7 Reconnect and verify actuation. Reconnect the electrical connector — push until you hear a click. Remove the lockout, restore power, and navigate to the edgebander HMI. Manually actuate the solenoid valve for 2 seconds. Listen for a clean metallic click from the valve spool. Verify the cylinder extends and retracts smoothly without hesitation. If the cylinder stutters or the click sounds dull, repeat steps 2–6 or replace the coil. Log the final test result and move to the next valve in the sequence.
