Purpose

Establish a consistent method for inspecting and tensioning the main motor drive belt on beam saw equipment. Correct belt tension ensures proper torque transmission, minimizes heat buildup in bearings and belt, extends belt life, and prevents costly unscheduled downtime due to belt failure or saw stalling under load.

Scope

Applies to all beam saw lines equipped with a poly-V or wedge belt primary drive between the main motor and the arbor shaft. This procedure covers visual inspection, tension measurement using the force-deflection method or sonic tension meter, and final adjustment. It does not cover arbor bearing replacement or motor alignment.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOPerform Lockout/Tagout on the main electrical disconnect. Verify zero energy state with a qualified electrician before opening any guards.
  • PPESafety glasses, hearing protection, and cut-resistant gloves (Level 5) must be worn when handling belts or reaching into the drive compartment.
  • PINCHKeep hands and tools clear of the belt and pulley interface during manual rotation. Use an insulated pry bar to assist with motor movement.

  • Combination wrench set (metric, sizes 13mm–24mm)
  • Crowfoot wrench set for motor mount bolts
  • Torque wrench (N·m)
  • Pry bar (insulated, 24″)
  • Replacement belt (on-hand, verify part number)
  • Belt dressing / cleaner (isopropyl alcohol wipes)
  • Flashlight / inspection mirror
  • Sonic tension meter (optional, for poly-V belts)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Isolate & Lockout: Switch the main disconnect to OFF. Apply personal lock and tag. Attempt to start the saw to verify zero energy. Wait 60 seconds for the drive bus to discharge completely.
2 Remove Access Guards: Unfasten the drive belt guard using the appropriate socket. Store guard and fasteners in a clean location. Inspect guard for cracks or missing vibration dampeners.
3 Initial Visual Inspection: Rotate the belt by hand (if accessible) observing for cracks, glazing, chunk-outs, or fabric fraying on the tension side. Run a flashlight along the belt and pulley grooves. Look for “crowning” or “shine” on the belt sidewalls indicating slippage or misalignment.
4 Measure Static Tension: Select the correct tension gauge adapter (A, B, C, D for classical; or “Poly-V” adapter). Place gauge at the center of the belt span. Measure the force required to deflect the belt 1/64″ per inch of span length. Record the reading in lbf or N.
5 Calculate Target Tension: Refer to the beam saw OEM manual or belt manufacturer's specifications for the drive layout. Example: for a 5-belt SPZ section drive, combined static tension should be 450–550 N. For a single Poly-V J-section belt, target installed tension is typically 220–280 N.
6 Adjust Belt Tension: Loosen the motor mount bolts (base plate and sliding plate) using the crowfoot and wrench. Use the tensioning bolt at the rear of the motor base to move the motor away from the arbor. Apply tension gradually. Re-tighten the sliding plate bolts snug.
7 Re-check & Torque: Re-measure tension using the gauge. Adjust if necessary. Perform this step twice to account for belt seating. Once correct, torque the motor mount bolts to OEM specification (e.g., 85 N·m for M14 bolts).
8 Final Run & Verification: Reinstall the belt guard. Remove LOTO. Start the saw and bring it to operating speed. Use a strobe tachometer to verify arbor RPM against the target (e.g., 3600 RPM). Listen for belt chirp, squeal, or flutter. Run for 5 minutes under no load, then shut down and perform a final feel-check for hot spots on bearing housings.
