Beam Saw Scoring Blade Motor Brush Check
Inspect, measure, and replace carbon brushes on the scoring blade motor of a horizontal beam saw. Prevents commutator arc damage, eliminates scoring blade drift, and avoids catastrophic motor failure during production runs.
This preventive maintenance task ensures the scoring blade motor on a beam saw maintains proper brush-to-commutator contact. Carbon brushes wear progressively under normal operation; if left unchecked, worn brushes cause arcing, commutator scoring, and eventual motor burn-out. A 30-minute brush check every 200 production hours prevents unplanned downtime and extends motor service life by up to 300%.
Applies to all horizontal beam saws equipped with a separate scoring blade motor (single-phase or three-phase AC universal motors with carbon brush assemblies). Includes machines from manufacturers such as Schelling, Giben, SCM, Holzma, and similar. This procedure is performed by a qualified industrial electrician or certified maintenance technician. Does not cover main blade motor brush systems — refer to SOP-MBM-002 for main drive motors.
- Lockout/tagout the beam saw at the main disconnecting means. Verify zero energy with a calibrated voltage tester (CAT III 600 V minimum) at both the main disconnect and the scoring motor terminal box.
- Wear Class 00 electrical safety gloves, safety glasses, and non-conductive footwear. Use a dielectric mat underfoot when working inside the motor housing.
- If brush holders show signs of arcing or pitting, assume the commutator may have charged capacitors. Discharge all capacitors using a 5 kΩ, 50 W resistor before contacting any conductive surface.
- Carbon dust is electrically conductive and a respiratory irritant. Use a HEPA-filtered shop vac during cleaning — never blow dust with compressed air alone without vacuum capture.
- Lockout/tagout kit (personal lock, hasp, danger tag)
- Voltage tester (CAT III 600 V, non-contact and contact modes)
- Digital multimeter (min. 20 kΩ resistance range)
- Carbon brush wear gauge — or digital caliper (0.01 mm resolution)
- Replacement brush kit — OEM part per machine manual (typically 12×8×25 mm carbon-copper compound)
- Slot screwdriver (6 mm tip, insulated)
- Torque screwdriver or wrench (Nm range per motor plate spec)
- Non-residue electrical contact cleaner (e.g., CRC QD Contact Cleaner)
- Compressed air gun with nozzle (regulated to 30 psi max)
- HEPA-filtered shop vac
- Flashlight or headlamp (minimum 200 lumens)
- Dielectric mat (tested to 10 kV)
