Mig Welder Wire Drive Tension and Liner Maintenance
A comprehensive procedure for adjusting wire feed pressure, cleaning or replacing the liner, and verifying smooth wire delivery on MIG welding systems. Proper maintenance prevents bird-nesting, erratic arc, and weld defects.
This procedure establishes the standard method for checking and adjusting wire drive tension and maintaining the liner in a MIG welding system. Proper tension prevents wire bird-nesting, slipping, and erratic arc performance, reducing downtime and rework. Routine liner maintenance ensures consistent wire feed and prolongs the life of consumables.
This SOP applies to all MIG welding machines using solid or flux-cored wire with a standard wire feed system, including bench and floor-mounted units from Miller, Lincoln Electric, ESAB, and similar manufacturers. It covers tension adjustment, liner cleaning, and contact tip inspection. Does not cover push-pull or spool gun systems.
- Lockout/tagout the welding power source and wire feeder before performing any maintenance. Verify zero energy state.
- Wear safety glasses with side shields at all times. Use welding gloves when handling hot contact tips or nozzle. Wear flame‑resistant clothing.
- Ensure welding area is clear of flammable materials. Never perform maintenance while the machine is under load.

- Wire feed tension gauge (or use pull‑test method)
- Liner cleaning brush (nylon or stainless steel)
- Replacement contact tips (as needed)
- Wire cutters
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Liner replacement kit (if damage is found)
- Canned compressed air or dry shop air (max 30 PSI)
