Purpose

To provide clear instructions for safely replacing the memory backup battery on a CNC controller (e.g., Fanuc, Siemens, Mitsubishi) to prevent loss of machine parameters, offsets, and program data during power-down.

Scope

This procedure applies to all CNC machines equipped with a backup battery for the controller's volatile memory (SRAM/DRAM). It covers the steps from pre-checks, power-down, battery replacement, power-up, and verification. It does not cover replacement of batteries in servo drives or other components.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout the main disconnect to isolate all power sources. Verify zero energy with a voltmeter.
  • PPEWear safety glasses and insulated gloves. Use a non-conductive tool.
  • ESDUse an anti-static wrist strap and mat to avoid damage to sensitive electronics.
  • BATDispose of old batteries properly. Do not short circuit or recharge lithium batteries.

  • Replacement battery (CR2032, BR3032, or specific to controller – consult manual)
  • Anti-static wrist strap
  • Insulated screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips)
  • Digital voltmeter
  • Lockout/tagout kit
  • Silicone grease or dielectric grease (optional, for terminals)
  • Labels (to mark wires if needed)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Identify the battery location on the CNC controller (often on the main board or memory card). Note the battery type and orientation.
2 Perform LOTO: turn off main power, lock disconnect, tag out.
3 Wait for power-down delay (5–10 minutes for capacitor discharge). Verify zero voltage with voltmeter between line terminals.
4 Ground yourself with anti-static wrist strap connected to a common earth ground.
5 Carefully remove the old battery, noting polarity. Use a non-conductive tool to pry if necessary.
6 Inspect battery holder and contacts for corrosion or damage. Clean if needed with contact cleaner.
7 Insert the new battery with correct polarity (positive facing up or as marked).
8 Close the controller cover and re-lock if applicable.
9 Remove LOTO and power on the machine.
10 Verify controller boots without alarm (check parameter loss alarm). If alarm appears, reload parameters from backup. Record battery replacement date in maintenance log.
