Purpose

To eliminate the risk of kickback and workpiece ejection on sliding table saws by establishing a rigorous, repeatable protocol for matching riving knife thickness to the specific saw blade installed. This procedure ensures the riving knife is always thick enough to prevent the workpiece from pinching the back of the blade, yet thin enough to avoid contact with the carbide teeth. Compliance with this SOP directly addresses critical safety requirements defined in CSA Z432 (Safeguarding of Machinery) and ANSI O1.1 (Woodworking Machinery Safety).

Scope

This procedure applies to all industrial sliding table saws equipped with riving knives operating within the facility. It covers the selection, dimensional verification, and installation of the correct riving knife for standard rip, crosscut, and combination saw blades. It does not cover scoring blades, dado stacks, or non-standard blade configurations without prior engineering review and approved variance. All shifts — day, swing, and graveyard — must adhere to this standard.

  • LOTODisconnect machine from power source and verify zero energy state before any blade or riving knife change. Padlock and tag the disconnect switch per facility LOTO procedure. Only the technician performing the work holds the key.
  • PPEImpact-resistant safety glasses (Z87+), hearing protection, and ANSI A2 minimum cut-resistant gloves. Use dedicated blade lifting gloves to handle carbide-tipped saw blades. Foot protection: steel-toed boots meeting CSA Z195.
  • CRUSHObserve all pinch points during riving knife adjustment and locking mechanism engagement. Never reach into the blade chamber while the arbor is coasting or rotating.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout the sliding table saw following facility-specific LOTO procedures. Verify zero energy state on the main disconnect switch.
2 Remove the saw blade. Clean the arbor flange, collar, and riving knife mounting bracket of all debris, resin, and sawdust buildup.
3 Measure the saw blade body thickness (plate thickness) using the digital caliper. Take the measurement on the polished plate surface, avoiding any coatings. Record the value to the nearest 0.01 mm.
4 Measure the saw blade kerf (total width of cut generated by the tooth set) at three distinct points around the blade. Record the maximum value observed to the nearest 0.01 mm.
5 Calculate the allowable riving knife thickness range. The selected knife must be thicker than the plate thickness but thinner than the kerf. A minimum clearance of 0.1 mm between the kerf and the knife is required. If kerf minus plate thickness is less than 1.2 mm, reject the blade as unsuitable for safe riving knife application.
6 Select the riving knife from the factory-approved set whose thickness falls within the calculated range. Prioritize the thickest possible fit to maximize anti-kickback protection.
7 Install the selected riving knife. Torque the fasteners to the manufacturer's specified value using a calibrated torque wrench. A loose riving knife is a critical safety hazard.
8 Reinstall the saw blade. Rotate the blade by hand through at least two full rotations to confirm absolutely no contact between the riving knife and the carbide teeth or blade body.
9 Adjust riving knife height and lateral alignment per manufacturer specifications. The knife should follow the curvature of the blade and sit just below the gullet of the highest tooth.
10 Document the installed riving knife thickness and recorded saw blade measurements in the equipment PM log or CMMS. Remove LOTO devices and restore power. Perform a no-load test run to confirm correct operational clearance.
