CNC Router Cable Carrier Drag Chain Inspection
This procedure covers the systematic inspection, cleaning, and wear assessment of the cable carrier (drag chain) on a 3‑axis CNC router. Following these steps prevents cable abrasion, reduces unplanned downtime, and extends chain life.
The cable carrier (drag chain) protects power, signal, and coolant lines from abrasion and snagging during machine motion. Regular inspection identifies worn links, loose fasteners, and cable chafing before they cause axis faults, short circuits, or costly production stoppages. This SOP ensures all carrier assemblies meet manufacturer tolerances and are lubricated per OEM recommendations.
Applies to all 3‑axis CNC routers equipped with enclosed or open cable carriers manufactured by Igus® / Tsubaki® equivalents. Covers X‑axis, Y‑axis, and Z‑axis carriers. Excludes: linear rail alignment, spindle service, and coolant system overhaul (refer to separate SOPs). This procedure is performed every 90 operating days or 500 hours, whichever comes first.
- Lock out the main disconnect before any contact with the cable carrier. Verify zero‑energy state with a qualified voltage tester. Padlock, hasp, and tag must be in place.
- Wear cut‑resistant gloves (ANSI A4 minimum) and safety glasses with side shields. Chips and sharp cable ties may be present inside the carrier.
- Pinch hazard — keep fingers clear of pivot points when flexing the chain manually. Use a non‑conductive tool to move links if necessary.
- Degreaser and lubricant may be slippery. Contain drips with absorbent pads and clean up immediately. Refer to individual SDS for handling.
- Industrial degreaser (e.g., Simple Green Pro HD)
- Lint‑free wipes or shop towels
- Silicone‑free lubricant (e.g., Super Lube 21030)
- Torque wrench (5–30 N·m range) with hex bit
- Hex‑key set (metric 3–10 mm)
- Dial caliper or wear gauge (0.01 mm resolution)
- Inspection mirror & LED flashlight
- Padlock, hasp, LOTO tag
- Paint pen (white or yellow)
