Edgebander Pressure Roller Segment Change For Shaped Edges

This procedure covers the safe, precise removal and replacement of segmented pressure rollers on an edgebander configured for shaped (contoured) edge profiles. Proper segment selection and installation ensure uniform glue bond, prevent edge lifting, and extend roller life.

Purpose

To define a repeatable, safe method for exchanging individual pressure roller segments on a CNC edgebander when processing shaped edge profiles. Ensures that each segment applies correct, uniform pressure along the contoured edge, preventing adhesive failure (cold joints, edge lifting) and minimizing downtime.

Scope

This SOP applies to all models of edgebander equipped with a segmented pressure roller system (e.g., Homag KAL series, Biesse Akron, SCM Contour). Covers setup, disassembly, segment selection, installation, and post-change pressure verification. Does not cover full roller carrier removal or drive train maintenance.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout (LOTO) the edgebander at the main disconnect. Verify zero energy state on all pneumatic and electrical systems before accessing pressure zone.
  • PPEWear cut-resistant gloves, safety glasses, and hearing protection. Hot glue residue may be present; allow glue unit to cool below 40°C before handling.
  • PINCHKeep hands clear of spring-loaded retaining plates and segment tracks during removal/insertion; use non-marring pry tools as needed.
  • CHEMUse only manufacturer-approved cleaning solvents; avoid contact with rubber segments. Ventilate area if using volatile cleaners.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Hex key set (metric: 3, 4, 5 mm) – typically for set screws
  • Torque wrench (range 1–12 Nm) with hex bit adapter
  • Replacement pressure roller segments (select hardness per edge profile: soft for radius < 3 mm, medium for 3–8 mm, hard for > 8 mm)
  • Lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol or approved track cleaner
  • Feeler gauge (0.05–0.20 mm) for pressure gap verification
  • Non-marring pry bar or segment removal tool
  • Manufacturer’s torque spec card (typically 4–6 Nm for set screws)
  • Alignment jig (if available for your machine model)
  • Safety lockout kit and personal PPE

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout (LOTO): Isolate the edgebander at the main electrical disconnect. Bleed residual pneumatic pressure from the roller carrier circuit. Attach personal lock and tag.
2 Access pressure roller assembly: Remove the protective cover (typically four quarter-turn fasteners or M6 bolts). Set aside safely.
3 Inspect and document existing segments: Note the order, orientation (arrow direction), and wear pattern. Photograph if needed. Check for bulging or uneven compression.
4 Loosen segment retaining set screws: Using the appropriate hex key, back off each set screw 1–2 turns. Do not remove completely; they are captive in most designs.
5 Remove worn segment: Slide the segment axially out of the dovetail track using a non-marring pry tool if stuck. Keep track clean; do not force.
6 Clean and inspect track: Wipe the dovetail track with lint-free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Check for burrs, scoring, or adhesive buildup. Deburr with fine file if needed.
7 Select replacement segment: Choose segment durometer based on edge profile radius: Soft (65A) for sharp radii < 3 mm, medium (70A) for 3–8 mm, hard (80A) for large radii > 8 mm.
8 Install new segment: Align the segment dovetail with the track and slide it fully into position. Ensure orientation arrow points in the feed direction.
9 Torque set screws: Using a torque wrench, tighten each set screw in a criss-cross pattern to 4–6 Nm (or per manufacturer spec). Re-check after first test run.
10 Reassemble, test, and verify: Reinstall protective cover, remove LOTO, and power up. Run a test workpiece with known edge profile. Check glue line for uniform spread and immediate bond. If splices show gaps, adjust pressure piston preload per machine manual.
