Purpose

To set the correct braking torque on the edgebander coil holder so that the coil unwinds with consistent resistance. Proper tension prevents overfeeding (which causes wrinkles and jams) and under‑feeding (which causes gaps and edge‑band rejects). This adjustment also reduces wear on the feed rollers and ensures repeatable peel‑film removal.

Scope

This procedure applies to all edgebander models that use a spring‑loaded disc brake assembly mounted on the coil holder shaft. It is valid for PVC, ABS, PP, and veneer coils up to 50 kg. This SOP does not cover electronically controlled magnetic‑particle brakes or servo‑driven unwind systems.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout (LOTO) the main electrical disconnect and pneumatic supply before opening any guards. Verify zero energy state with a voltage tester.
  • PPEWear cut‑resistant gloves, safety glasses, and close‑toe footwear. The brake disc may have sharp edges. Avoid loose clothing near rotating parts.
  • PINCHDo not place fingers between the brake disc and the coil flange while adjusting. Use hex keys with a ball‑end to reach set screws from a safe angle.
  • SPRNGThe brake spring is preloaded. Do not unscrew the adjustment nut more than three full turns at a time – sudden release can cause the assembly to shift.

  • Hex key set (metric, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm) – ball‑end preferred
  • Torque screwdriver or small torque wrench (N·m scale)
  • Feeler gauge set (0.10–0.50 mm)
  • Clean, lint‑free rag
  • Coil tension gauge (optional, for repeatable calibration)
  • Machine manufacturer’s manual (for specific torque values)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lock out and isolate. Place the machine in LOTO. Disconnect the main electrical supply and lock the pneumatic isolation valve. Test for zero energy at the brake solenoid.
2 Remove the side guard. Using the appropriate hex key, remove the fasteners securing the coil‑holder guard. Set aside and store the fasteners in a safe place.
3 Loosen the disc set screws. Identify the three (or four) set screws on the brake disc hub. Loosen each by ¼ turn counter‑clockwise – do not remove fully. This frees the disc for adjustment.
4 Adjust brake tension. Rotate the central adjustment nut clockwise to increase spring preload (more drag) or counter‑clockwise to reduce tension. A good starting point: apply 2.5 N·m of torque using the torque screwdriver. For heavy coils (≥30 kg) increase to 3.5 N·m; for lightweight veneer coils reduce to 1.5 N·m.
5 Tighten set screws and verify runout. Re‑tighten all set screws to the manufacturer’s specification (typically 6 N·m) in a criss‑cross pattern. Slide a feeler gauge between the disc and the coil flange – clearance must be uniform at 0.15–0.25 mm all around. Re‑adjust if necessary.
6 Test the drag manually. With gloves on, rotate the coil flange by hand. The resistance should feel smooth and consistent – the flange should not free‑spin more than ½ turn after you release it. If too tight or too loose, repeat steps 3–5.
7 Reinstall guard and restore power. Replace the side guard and fasteners. Remove LOTO tags and restore power. Run a short test cycle with scrap edgebanding; verify the coil unwinds without flutter or jerk.
