Edgebander Coil Holder Brake Tension Adjustment
Ensure consistent unwinding of PVC, ABS, or veneer coils by setting the correct drag on the mechanical brake assembly. Over‑ or under‑tension causes material waste, feed jams, and edge‑reject scrap.
To set the correct braking torque on the edgebander coil holder so that the coil unwinds with consistent resistance. Proper tension prevents overfeeding (which causes wrinkles and jams) and under‑feeding (which causes gaps and edge‑band rejects). This adjustment also reduces wear on the feed rollers and ensures repeatable peel‑film removal.
This procedure applies to all edgebander models that use a spring‑loaded disc brake assembly mounted on the coil holder shaft. It is valid for PVC, ABS, PP, and veneer coils up to 50 kg. This SOP does not cover electronically controlled magnetic‑particle brakes or servo‑driven unwind systems.
- Lockout/tagout (LOTO) the main electrical disconnect and pneumatic supply before opening any guards. Verify zero energy state with a voltage tester.
- Wear cut‑resistant gloves, safety glasses, and close‑toe footwear. The brake disc may have sharp edges. Avoid loose clothing near rotating parts.
- Do not place fingers between the brake disc and the coil flange while adjusting. Use hex keys with a ball‑end to reach set screws from a safe angle.
- The brake spring is preloaded. Do not unscrew the adjustment nut more than three full turns at a time – sudden release can cause the assembly to shift.
- Hex key set (metric, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm) – ball‑end preferred
- Torque screwdriver or small torque wrench (N·m scale)
