This procedure describes the safe and controlled method for performing a stationary forced regeneration on a heavy-duty diesel engine DPF to remove accumulated soot and restore exhaust backpressure to acceptable levels.

Purpose

To provide a standardized, safe method for initiating and monitoring a stationary DPF forced regeneration. This ensures complete oxidation of trapped soot particulates, prevents engine derating or shutdown due to high exhaust backpressure, and extends the service interval for ash cleaning services.

Scope

Applies to all heavy-duty diesel engines equipped with a DPF system used in industrial applications (e.g., Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Volvo). This includes material handling equipment, standby generators, and fleet vehicles. Personnel must be trained on the specific OEM diagnostic software and engine platform.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOExhaust gas temperatures exceed 600 °C. Keep all personnel clear of the exhaust outlet. Connect exhaust extraction to prevent fume accumulation.
  • PPEWear heat-resistant gloves, safety glasses, and long sleeves. Do not touch the exhaust system during or immediately after regeneration.
  • FIREEnsure the area is free of combustible materials, hydraulic lines, or fuel leaks. Have a Class B/C fire extinguisher within immediate reach.
  • GASNever perform regeneration indoors without a direct exhaust extraction connection. Carbon monoxide is lethal.

  • OEM/Model-specific diagnostic tool (e.g., Caterpillar ET, Cummins INSITE, Detroit Diesel DDDL)
  • Exhaust gas thermometer / thermocouple with data logging
  • Class B/C fire extinguisher (min. 10 lbs)
  • Exhaust extraction hose system (overhead or portable)
  • PPE: Heat-resistant gloves, safety glasses, flame-resistant coveralls

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Pre-Operation Check: Verify engine coolant, oil, and fuel levels. Inspect the DPF housing for physical damage or cracks. Ensure all aftertreatment sensors are connected.
2 Connect Diagnostic Tool: Plug into the vehicle's diagnostic port. Navigate to the Aftertreatment / DPF forced regeneration menu. Clear any active fault codes that may inhibit regeneration.
3 Position & Ventilate: Move the vehicle outdoors or connect the exhaust extraction hose directly to the exhaust pipe. Verify the extraction system is operating at the required CFM.
4 Verify Inhibits: Check the DPF regen inhibit switch (if equipped) is OFF. Ensure the parking brake is engaged, engine is at operating temperature (coolant > 70 °C), and DPF soot load is > 40% as indicated by the scan tool.
5 Initiate Regeneration: Using the diagnostic tool, select "Stationary Regeneration" and confirm the action. The engine RPM will rise and hold between 1500-2000 RPM.
6 Monitor Parameters: Observe the exhaust temperature (target: 550-650 °C), DPF inlet pressure, and soot level. Listen for abnormal combustion noises. Do not leave the area unattended.
7 Completion: The diagnostic tool will indicate regeneration complete. Allow the engine to idle for 2-5 minutes to cool turbocharger and exhaust components.
8 Post-Inspection: Shut down the engine. After a 15-minute cool-down, inspect the DPF pressure sensor readings. Verify soot load is below 10% or at a safe baseline. Record the event in the maintenance log.
