Purpose

To provide a standardized, safe, and repeatable procedure for replacing desiccant media in a compressed air desiccant dryer — ensuring consistent dew point performance, preventing moisture contamination in downstream piping and equipment, and extending the service life of the dryer vessel and internals.

Scope

This procedure applies to all heatless, heated, and blower-purge desiccant dryers on site with a working pressure range of 80–150 psig (550–1034 kPa). It covers activated alumina and molecular sieve media types. Twin-tower and single-vessel configurations are both included. This SOP does not cover refrigerant dryers or membrane dryers.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout the compressor and dryer electrical disconnect at the source. Verify zero energy state with a qualified electrician before opening the vessel.
  • PPEWear safety glasses, nitrile gloves, and a NIOSH-approved P95 respirator when handling desiccant dust. Activated alumina dust is a respiratory irritant.
  • PRESSDepressurize the dryer vessel completely to 0 psig before removing any fill port or flange. Do not open fill ports while the system is under pressure — escaping media and air can cause injury.
  • HOTAllow the dryer to cool to ambient temperature if regeneration heaters have been in operation. Surface temperatures may exceed 60 °C (140 °F).
Required Tools & Materials
  • Replacement desiccant — activated alumina or molecular sieve per OEM specification
  • Vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter (wet/dry rated for fine dust)
  • 2″ wide duct tape or vessel gasket sealant (if gasket is reusable)
  • Torque wrench — 0–200 ft·lb (0–271 N·m) range with appropriate socket
  • 3/8″ drive ratchet, extension bar, and socket set
  • LED flashlight or drop light
  • NIOSH-approved P95 respirator and disposable nitrile gloves
  • Heavy-duty plastic waste bag for spent desiccant
  • Funnel or desiccant fill hose (anti-static preferred)
  • Permanent marker and weatherproof tag-out label

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Isolate and lock out. Close the inlet and outlet isolation valves. Apply LOTO on the electrical disconnect for the compressor and dryer. Verify zero energy with a qualified electrician.
2 Depressurize the vessel. Open the purge exhaust valve and the manual vent valve. Monitor the pressure gauge until it reads 0 psig. Leave the vent valve open for the duration of the job.
3 Remove the top fill port cover(s). Unbolt the cover flange using a ratchet and socket. Carefully lift the cover and inspect the gasket. Set the cover on a clean surface with the gasket side up. Mark any bolts that show corrosion.
4 Extract spent desiccant. Use the HEPA vacuum wand to remove all loose media from the vessel. Reach through the fill port with a non-marring tool to break up any caked or bridged material. Vacuum until the support screen or bottom drain is visible and clear.
5 Inspect internal condition. Shine a flashlight into the vessel. Look for corrosion pitting, oil contamination (black or brown staining), physical damage to the support screen, or debris in the bottom drain. Record all findings on the PM log. If oil contamination is present, investigate upstream coalescing filter performance before refilling.
6 Fill with new desiccant. Pour fresh media through a funnel or fill hose slowly to minimize particle breakage. Fill to within 1″ (25 mm) of the top flange — never above the fill line. Do not overfill; the headspace is required for proper purge flow and bed expansion.
7 Reinstall the top cover. Replace the gasket if cracked, compressed, or otherwise degraded. Position the cover and hand-start all bolts. Torque in a crisscross pattern to the manufacturer’s specification — typically 40–60 ft·lb (54–81 N·m) for an 8″ flange. Record the torque value on the PM log.
8 Pressurize and leak test. Close the manual vent valve. Slowly open the inlet isolation valve — no faster than 10 psig per second. When full line pressure is reached, apply a soap solution around the flange joint. Bubbles indicate a leak; tighten bolts incrementally (¼ turn at a time) in sequence until leakage stops.
9 Return to service. Open the outlet isolation valve. Reset the purge timer and regeneration cycle controller if applicable. Write the new desiccant batch number, installation date, and next planned replacement date on the weatherproof tag-out label and affix it to the dryer body.
10 Dispose of spent media. Seal the spent desiccant in a heavy-duty plastic waste bag. Dispose per local waste regulations — activated alumina is generally non-hazardous but may contain trace fines. Do not vacuum or sweep dry fines into open air; use wet methods or the HEPA vacuum to control dust.
