Purpose

To provide a standardized, repeatable method for inspecting acoustic enclosures on industrial dust collectors. The primary objectives are to verify structural integrity of acoustic panels, assess noise attenuation performance against baseline data, identify corrosion or fatigue in fastening systems, and detect internal damping degradation before it leads to regulatory non-compliance or equipment failure.

Scope

This SOP applies to all centrifugal and filtered dust collection systems where acoustic enclosures are integral to noise control or pressure retention. It covers standard panelized enclosures, duct penetration seals, and access doors. It excludes fan-only silencers and in-line duct attenuators unless they form part of the primary enclosure boundary.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOComplete zero-energy isolation per CSA Z460 prior to opening any enclosure panels. Lock out main disconnect, tag out, and verify with a live-dead-live tester. Confirm impeller stop rotation before proceeding.
  • PPEHearing protection (≥NRR 23 dB) is mandatory during operational pass-by acoustic surveys. Level D dust mask or half-face respirator required during interior inspections if combustible dust residue is present.
  • CONFIf internal chamber access is required, follow confined space entry permit protocol per CSA Z1006. Continuous gas monitoring for CO and LEL mandatory.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout Isolation — Perform zero-energy isolation per CSA Z460. Lock out main disconnect, tag out, and verify with live-dead-live tester. Confirm impeller stop rotation before proceeding.
2 Operational Pass-By Acoustic Survey — Conduct a 1m perimeter noise mapping at 3 points per side, 1.5m height. Record dBA levels and compare against baseline commissioning data. Deviation > 3 dBA mandates internal inspection.
3 Panel Structural Integrity (Tap Test) — Inspect 100% of enclosure panels using a modal tap hammer. A dead/dampened response indicates insulation delamination or underlying corrosion. Flag panels for immediate remediation in ServiceGrid.
4 Seal and Gasket Integrity Check — Inspect all compression seals around access doors and duct penetrations. Replace seals exhibiting > 30% compression set, cracking, or oil contamination.
5 Internal Acoustic Media Assessment — Use borescope to inspect internal liners and acoustic media. Check for moisture saturation, sagging, fiber erosion, or biological growth. Document findings with photo capture.
6 Fastener Torque Verification — Spot-check 10% of structural fasteners per panel using a calibrated digital torque wrench. M8 bolts target 28 Nm, M10 target 49 Nm. Remediate loose connections to spec.
7 Documentation and Severity Tagging — Complete the full inspection event in ServiceGrid. Assign severity levels: Critical (immediate shutdown), Repairable (schedule within 1 week), Monitor (track trend). Attach thermal and acoustic data to the asset history.
