Purpose

The primary purpose of this SOP is to standardize the removal of dust, hydrocarbon films, and debris from vacuum pump cooling fins, fans, and shrouds. Restricted airflow is the leading cause of high-discharge temperature alarms and unplanned pump trips. Adherence to this procedure extends seal life, maintains volumetric efficiency, and prevents costly rotor-to-stator contact.

Scope

Applies to all rotary vane and screw-style vacuum pumps in the facility (Models: Busch R5, Leybold SOGEVAC, Becker VT). This includes both air-cooled and oil-cooled configurations where ambient air is forced over a heat exchanger. This procedure does NOT cover water-cooled units or pumps located in hazardous classified areas requiring hot-work permits.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout the electrical disconnect and verify zero voltage before accessing fan shrouds or cooler surfaces.
  • PPEWear cut-resistant gloves when handling finned surfaces. Safety glasses with side shields are mandatory to prevent debris ingress to eyes.
  • BURNAllow the pump and cooler to surface-cool below 45°C (113°F) before beginning any cleaning procedure. Discharge temperatures can exceed 100°C during operation.

  • Fin comb (specific to cooler fin pitch)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout / Tagout: Isolate the vacuum pump at the main electrical disconnect. Apply LOTO device. Verify zero voltage with a rated voltmeter. Wait 10 minutes for surfaces to cool.
2 Access Shroud Removal: Remove the fan guard / cooler shroud retaining screws. Carefully set shroud aside without damaging wiring or fan blades.
3 Dry Debris Removal: Use compressed air (nozzle at 45° angle) to blow debris out from the cooler core. Aim opposite to normal fan airflow direction. Follow up with a HEPA vacuum to capture airborne particulates.
4 Finned Surface Cleaning: Use a non-metallic bristle brush and fin comb to dislodge embedded dirt, oil films, and bug residue. Work gently parallel to the fins to avoid bending or tearing the aluminum.
5 Application of Degreaser: If a hydrocarbon film is visible, apply a non-chlorinated degreaser. Let it soak for 5–10 minutes to emulsify the oil. Do not use caustic cleaners on aluminum fins.
6 Flushing & Drying: Rinse with low-pressure water (if degreaser was used) or compressed air. Allow cooler to dry fully before reassembly. Verify no standing water in the fan housing.
7 Fan & Motor Inspection: Spin the cooling fan by hand; check for smooth rotation, cracks, or missing blades. Inspect motor windings for dirt accumulation. Clean as necessary.
8 Reassembly & Run Test: Reinstall shroud and fan guard. Torque fasteners to OEM specifications. Remove LOTO. Start pump and verify airflow with an anemometer at the exhaust grill. Acceptable airflow: within 15% of OEM baseline. Check motor amperage against nameplate FLA.
