Vacuum Pump Cooler Cleaning And Airflow Verification
This procedure details the mandatory 500-hour / quarterly cleaning cycle for vacuum pump coolers. Proper airflow is critical to prevent thermal overload, oil breakdown, and premature bearing failure.
The primary purpose of this SOP is to standardize the removal of dust, hydrocarbon films, and debris from vacuum pump cooling fins, fans, and shrouds. Restricted airflow is the leading cause of high-discharge temperature alarms and unplanned pump trips. Adherence to this procedure extends seal life, maintains volumetric efficiency, and prevents costly rotor-to-stator contact.
Applies to all rotary vane and screw-style vacuum pumps in the facility (Models: Busch R5, Leybold SOGEVAC, Becker VT). This includes both air-cooled and oil-cooled configurations where ambient air is forced over a heat exchanger. This procedure does NOT cover water-cooled units or pumps located in hazardous classified areas requiring hot-work permits.
- Lockout/Tagout the electrical disconnect and verify zero voltage before accessing fan shrouds or cooler surfaces.
- Wear cut-resistant gloves when handling finned surfaces. Safety glasses with side shields are mandatory to prevent debris ingress to eyes.
- Allow the pump and cooler to surface-cool below 45°C (113°F) before beginning any cleaning procedure. Discharge temperatures can exceed 100°C during operation.
- Compressed air gun with nozzle (max 100 psi)
- Non-metallic bristle brush (e.g., nylon or brass)
- HEPA vacuum cleaner with crevice tool
- Fin comb (specific to cooler fin pitch)
- Non-chlorinated degreaser (plastic-safe)
- Flashlight
- LOTO kit & voltage tester
- Anemometer (for airflow verification)
