Purpose

To provide a standardized, reproducible procedure for inspecting explosion vent panels on dust collectors. The primary goals are to verify structural integrity, ensure proper sealing and latching, confirm that no debris or obstructions block the vent path, and document every finding in the maintenance record. Compliance with NFPA 68 and local occupational health & safety codes is maintained through rigorous adherence to this protocol.

Scope

This SOP applies to all explosion vent panels installed on baghouse, cartridge, and cyclone dust collectors operating in environments handling combustible dusts (metal, wood, food, chemical, pharmaceutical). It covers visual inspection, mechanical function checks of hinges and latches, clearance zone verification, gasket assessment, fastener torque verification, and digital documentation. Panels that have activated or show signs of damage are identified for immediate corrective action.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOPerform lockout/tagout on the dust collector electrical disconnect and all pneumatic energy sources. Use a verified zero-energy-state check. Only the inspector may remove the lock.
  • PPEWear arc‑rated clothing (HRC 2 minimum), safety glasses with side shields, hearing protection, and non-sparking tools. Use a Class II rated vacuum for dust cleanup.
  • DUSTNever create a dust cloud. Vacuum combustible dust from the panel area before opening any covers. Keep ignition sources at least 5 m away.
  • FALLIf the panel is at height, use a properly inspected ladder or elevated work platform. Maintain three points of contact and tie off if working above 1.8 m.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout (LOTO). Isolate the dust collector by turning off the electrical disconnect and closing pneumatic valves. Apply personal lock and tag. Verify zero-energy state with a voltage tester and by attempting a brief startup.
2 Clean the panel area. Using a Class II rated HEPA vacuum, carefully remove all combustible dust from the panel surface and surrounding 1 m radius. Check for any smouldering material and extinguish if present.
3 Visual inspection of panel. Examine the explosion panel face for dents, corrosion, tears, or deformation. Look for residue or soot that may indicate a previous activation. Photograph the panel and note any anomalies.
4 Inspect hinges and latches. Manually cycle each hinge and latch through its full range of motion. Verify there is no binding, galling, or excessive wear. Apply a thin film of non-sparking lubricant (e.g., silicone‑based) if necessary.
5 Check gasket condition. Inspect the perimeter seal/gasket. If it is cracked, compressed beyond 50% of original thickness, or missing — remove and replace with a new gasket of identical material and dimensions. Torque fasteners to spec.
6 Measure clearance zone. Using a tape or laser meter, confirm that no obstructions (beams, pipes, walls, shelves) exist within the manufacturer‑specified distance (typically ≥ 3 m). Record the actual clearances.
7 Verify fastener torque. Using a calibrated torque wrench, check a random sample of frame fasteners (minimum 20% or 4 fasteners, whichever is greater). Torque must be within ±5% of manufacturer specification. Retighten any that are below spec.
8 Document in ServiceGrid or log. Record date, inspector name, panel location identifier, results of each inspection point, photos, and any corrective actions taken. If using ServiceGrid, attach images directly to the work order.
9 Reverse LOTO and re‑energize. Remove lock and tag per facility procedure. Re‑energize the dust collector and verify normal operation (no alarms, airflow within parameters). Walk away only after system is stable.
10 Sign off and flag follow‑up. Complete the inspection sign‑off. If any deficiencies were noted (e.g., damaged panel, out‑of‑spec clearance), create a corrective work order and schedule the repair. Update the PM schedule accordingly.
