Dust Collector Fan Bearing Temperature Monitoring
Standard procedure for manual temperature measurement and logging of fan bearing housings on industrial dust collection systems. Early detection of overheating prevents bearing seizure, reduces fire risk, and extends equipment life.
To establish a standardized process for monitoring the operating temperature of dust collector fan bearings, enabling early detection of lubricant degradation, misalignment, or incipient failure. Consistent temperature logging reduces unplanned downtime and mitigates the risk of dust fires caused by overheated bearings.
This procedure applies to all fan bearing housings on central dust collection systems (baghouses, cartridge collectors, cyclones) operating in woodworking, metalworking, pharmaceutical, and bulk material handling facilities. It covers both induction motor bearings and direct-drive fan shafts. Excluded: submerged or slurry fans.
- Lockout/tagout the dust collector electrical disconnect and verify zero energy before accessing fan housing panels. Stored rotational energy may exist – allow fan to coast to a complete stop.
- Wear safety glasses, heat-resistant gloves, and hearing protection. Use a face shield if debris may be ejected from housing when opening inspection ports.
- Bearing housings may exceed 100°C during operation. Allow fan to cool to below 80°C before performing contact measurements. Use infrared thermometer for initial non-contact reading.
- Infrared thermometer (non-contact, ±1°C accuracy) or thermal imaging camera
- Contact probe thermometer with type K thermocouple (for high-accuracy readings)
- Lockout/tagout kit (padlock, hasp, tag, group LOTO if applicable)
- Wire brush and solvent (isopropyl alcohol or acetone) for cleaning measurement points
- Data logging sheet or CMMS (ServiceGrid recommended for real-time trend tracking)
- Personal protective equipment (safety glasses, heat-resistant gloves, hearing protection)
