Edgeband Tape Shrinkage Test

Thermal shrinkage measurement protocol for 2 mm and 3 mm PVC/ABS edgeband materials. Used for incoming quality verification and lot acceptance prior to production run release.

Purpose

To quantify the linear shrinkage of edgeband tape after exposure to a standardized heat load that simulates the thermal profile of a continuous edgebander application zone. Results directly determine lot acceptability. The procedure is designed to catch excessive shrinkage before production, preventing post-bond gap formation, corner lifting, and rework.

Scope

Applies to all incoming lots of PVC and ABS edgeband tape in thicknesses of 2.0 mm and 3.0 mm, including pre-coated and uncoated varieties. Excludes polyolefin (PO) and acrylic-based edgebands unless explicitly specified by the customer. All testing is performed under controlled laboratory conditions at 23 ± 2 °C and 50 ± 5 % RH after conditioning.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout the hot-air gun power supply at the panel when adjusting or replacing the heating element. Verify zero energy with a contact voltage tester before service.
  • PPEWear heat-resistant gloves (ASTM F1060, rating ≥ 200 °C), safety glasses with side shields, and a lab coat when handling heated specimens and operating the hot-air gun.
  • BURNAllow all heated specimens and the nozzle of the hot-air gun to cool for a minimum of 5 minutes before handling or storing. Surface temperature may exceed 150 °C.
  • FUMEOperate the hot-air gun under an exhaust hood or in a well-ventilated area. PVC decomposition releases HCl gas. If acrid odour is detected, abort the test and ventilate immediately.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Digital calliper — 0.01 mm resolution, Mitutoyo CD-6″AX or equivalent, calibrated within 90 days
  • Hot-air gun with digital temperature control — range 0–650 °C, nozzle diameter 12 mm, at least one calibrated set-point at 180 °C
  • Non-contact IR thermometer — laser sight, accuracy ±1.5 °C, emissivity set to 0.95
  • Steel rule — 300 mm × 0.5 mm graduation, NIST traceable
  • Template cutter — hardened steel, 50 mm × 50 mm internal cavity, with ejection spring
  • Granite surface plate — Grade B or better, minimum 300 mm × 300 mm
  • Timer — digital, resolution 1 second, with audible alarm
  • Fine-tip permanent marker — 0.5 mm tip, alcohol resistant

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Condition the sample material. Place the edgeband tape roll in the controlled environment chamber at 23 ± 2 °C and 50 ± 5 % RH for a minimum of 4 hours before sampling. Do not test material directly from unheated storage.
2 Excise test specimens. Strip and discard the first 500 mm of tape from the outer wrap. Using the template cutter, cut three 50 mm × 50 mm specimens from the centre third of the roll width. Avoid the edge 10 mm on either side.
3 Baseline dimensional measurement. Measure and record the length (L₀) and width (W₀) of each specimen at three marked locations using the digital calliper. Mark a reference corner with the fine-tip marker for orientation tracking.
4 Thermal exposure. Set the hot-air gun to 180 °C. Hold the nozzle 150 mm from the specimen surface, perpendicular, and sweep uniformly for 60 seconds. The target surface temperature is 140 ± 5 °C, verified immediately by IR thermometer.
5 Cool-down. Transfer the heated specimen to the clean granite surface plate with the marked face up. Allow to cool to ambient temperature for 10 minutes undisturbed. Do not force cool with air or water.
6 Post-heat dimensional measurement. Re-measure L₁ and W₁ at the same three locations recorded in Step 3. Calculate shrinkage per axis: (L₀ − L₁)/L₀ × 100 and (W₀ − W₁)/W₀ × 100. Report the maximum value from all three specimens.
7 Accept / reject decision. If any single specimen exceeds 2.0 % shrinkage in either axis, reject the entire lot. Flag for supplier corrective action and retain all three specimens in a sealed bag for 90 days with the test report.
