Purpose

To remove accumulated PUR adhesive, dust, and volatile residues from the exhaust hood and associated ductwork. Regular cleaning prevents fire ignition sources (e.g., hot adhesive/fan friction), sustains optimal vacuum/pressure for glue application, and extends the life of filter media and exhaust motor bearings.

Scope

Applicable to all Horn, Biesse, SCM and Homag PUR edgebanders with hood-mounted exhaust fans and replaceable filter packs. This SOP does not cover ductwork cleaning beyond the first 1 m from the hood outlet, nor does it cover electrical motor servicing beyond lockout.

Safety Precautions

LOTOLockout/tagout the machine at the main disconnect. Verify zero energy state with a voltage tester before opening any panel.
PPENitrile gloves, safety glasses, and a respirator with organic vapour/P100 cartridge. PUR dust and solvents are irritants and fire‑sensitive.
FIRENo open flames, sparks, or smoking in the work area. Have a Class B dry‑chemical extinguisher within 3 m. Remove all solvent‑soaked rags immediately to a sealed metal container.
CHEMSolvent must be PU‑rated (acetone or n‑butyl acetate). Never use flammable hydrocarbon blends without a hot‑work permit. Follow solvent SDS for ventilation.

Lint‑free wipes / industrial rags (20‑30 pieces)
Plastic gasket scraper (to avoid scratching metal surfaces)
Replacement filter media pack (if existing shows visible tearing or >60% clogging)
Shop vacuum with HEPA filter (for dry debris removal)
Lockout/tagout kit (padlock, hasp, tag)
Screwdriver set (flathead & Phillips; medium size)
Voltage tester / non‑contact pen
Class B fire extinguisher (portable, nearby)

Procedure: Step-by-Step

1 Perform lockout/tagout. Turn the edgebander’s main disconnect to OFF, apply a personal padlock and hasp, and attach a “DO NOT OPERATE” tag. Verify zero voltage at the exhaust fan terminal with a non‑contact tester.

2 Remove access panels. Using a screwdriver, remove the screws securing the exhaust hood’s front and side panels. Place all hardware in a labelled container. Set panels aside without damaging gaskets.

3 Inspect and service the filter media. Slide out the primary filter pack. Vacuum loose debris from the filter. If the filter shows tears, heavy saturation, or more than 60% visual clogging, replace it with a new media pack of the correct size.

4 Clean interior surfaces. Dampen a lint‑free wipe with PU solvent. Wipe down all interior hood surfaces—including fan blades, scroll housing, and back plate. Use the plastic scraper gently to dislodge baked‑on PUR deposits. Repeat with clean wipes until no visible residue remains. (Caution: keep solvent away from electrical terminals.)

5 Reassemble and test. Reinstall the filter media, then the access panels and screws. Remove the lockout/tagout. Restore power and run the exhaust fan for 2 minutes. Confirm even airflow (feel at the hood inlet), no abnormal vibration, and no solvent odour escaping the seal.
