Edgebander Exhaust Hood Cleaning For PUR
This procedure details the safe, step-by-step cleaning of the exhaust hood on PUR (polyurethane reactive) edgebanders to prevent adhesive buildup, maintain airflow, and reduce fire risk. Perform at 200‑hour intervals or when air flow drops by 15%.
To remove accumulated PUR adhesive, dust, and volatile residues from the exhaust hood and associated ductwork. Regular cleaning prevents fire ignition sources (e.g., hot adhesive/fan friction), sustains optimal vacuum/pressure for glue application, and extends the life of filter media and exhaust motor bearings.
Applicable to all Horn, Biesse, SCM and Homag PUR edgebanders with hood-mounted exhaust fans and replaceable filter packs. This SOP does not cover ductwork cleaning beyond the first 1 m from the hood outlet, nor does it cover electrical motor servicing beyond lockout.
- Lockout/tagout the machine at the main disconnect. Verify zero energy state with a voltage tester before opening any panel.
- Nitrile gloves, safety glasses, and a respirator with organic vapour/P100 cartridge. PUR dust and solvents are irritants and fire‑sensitive.
- No open flames, sparks, or smoking in the work area. Have a Class B dry‑chemical extinguisher within 3 m. Remove all solvent‑soaked rags immediately to a sealed metal container.
- Solvent must be PU‑rated (acetone or n‑butyl acetate). Never use flammable hydrocarbon blends without a hot‑work permit. Follow solvent SDS for ventilation.
- PU‑rated solvent (acetone or PUR cleaner; 1 L minimum)
- Lint‑free wipes / industrial rags (20‑30 pieces)
- Plastic gasket scraper (to avoid scratching metal surfaces)
- Replacement filter media pack (if existing shows visible tearing or >60% clogging)
- Shop vacuum with HEPA filter (for dry debris removal)
- Lockout/tagout kit (padlock, hasp, tag)
- Screwdriver set (flathead & Phillips; medium size)
- Voltage tester / non‑contact pen
- Class B fire extinguisher (portable, nearby)
