Purpose

To establish a standardized, repeatable method for calibrating the glue pot level sensor on CNC edgebanders. Correct calibration prevents dry-run heating element failure, eliminates false low-level alarms that cause downtime, and ensures consistent adhesive film thickness across production runs. Adherence to this procedure maintains traceability to manufacturer tolerances and reduces unplanned maintenance events.

Scope

This procedure applies to all CNC edgebander models equipped with an electronic glue pot level sensor (including capacitive disc and mechanical float-arm types). Typical makes include Holz-Her, Biesse, SCM, and Homag with pressurized or non-pressurized glue pot systems. This task is to be executed by a qualified industrial maintenance technician or a lead setup operator who has completed OEM-specific sensor calibration training. This SOP does not cover full glue pot replacement or heater circuit diagnostics.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout the edgebander main electrical disconnect before accessing the glue pot controller or sensor compartment. Verify zero energy state (0 VAC) at the controller terminals using a calibrated digital multimeter. Attach a personal danger tag.
  • BURNAllow the glue pot to fully cool to ambient temperature (below 40°C verified by IR thermometer) before opening. Molten adhesive (EVA/PUR) at operating temperature (~180–220°C) will cause severe thermal injury upon skin contact.
  • PPEWear cut-resistant gloves (minimum ANSI A4 cut level) when handling sensor probes, mounting brackets, or sharp adhesive residue. Wear Z87.1-rated safety glasses with side shields. Use thermally insulated gloves if residual warmth is detected.
  • FUMEEnsure local exhaust ventilation (LEV) is active and drawing air across the glue pot area. If the pot must be reheated briefly for cleaning, airborne particulate and fume levels must be controlled to below applicable OH limits (e.g., ACGIH TLVs for formaldehyde in EVA).
Required Tools & Materials
  • Digital Multimeter (Fluke 87V or equivalent with resolution to 0.1 VDC)
  • Feeler gauge set (metric 0.05 mm – 1.00 mm)
  • Allen key set (metric 1.5 mm – 6 mm, ball-end preferred)
  • Flathead screwdriver (insulated, 3 mm tip for potentiometer adjustment)
  • OEM calibration magnet (if specified for reed switch sensors) or known-good metal test piece
  • PTFE spray / non-stick release agent (e.g., WD-40 Specialist Silicone)
  • IR Thermometer (field calibrated, emissivity set to 0.95 for adhesive)
  • Torque screwdriver (Nm range, capable of 2–6 Nm)
  • High-temperature RTV silicone gasket maker
  • Edgebander manufacturer maintenance manual (specific to model)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Isolation & Cooldown: Perform LOTO on the edgebander main power disconnect. Verify 0 VAC at the glue pot controller terminals using a DMM. Place a "Do Not Operate" tag. Measure glue pot surface temperature with an IR thermometer; do not proceed until reading is stable below 40°C.
2 Access & Clean Sensor: Remove the glue pot cover plate (typically 4x M5 socket cap screws). Using PTFE spray and a non-abrasive cloth, clean all adhesive residue from the sensor probe and mounting bracket. Visually inspect the sensor element (capacitive disc for cracks or float arm for pivot binding).
3 Electrical Supply Check: Locate the level sensor terminals on the controller PCB. Set DMM to DC volts. Measure sensor supply voltage across VCC and GND (expected: 24 VDC ± 10%). If out of tolerance, troubleshoot the 24 VDC power supply circuit before proceeding.
4 Mechanical Zero Reference: Loosen the sensor mounting bracket locking screws (2x M4) using a 3 mm allen key. With the glue pot empty and clean, position the sensor so its sensing face is exactly flush with the bottom plane of the glue pot liner (refer to OEM drawing). Tighten locking screws to 2.5 Nm using a torque screwdriver.
5 Air Gap Calibration (Electrical Set Point): Insert a 0.5 mm feeler gauge shim between the sensor face and a clean metal reference block placed inside the pot. Observe the sensor output signal on the DMM. Using an insulated flathead screwdriver, adjust the sensor potentiometer (VR1) until the output logic state transitions (HIGH→LOW or LOW→HIGH depending on sensor fail-safe logic).
6 Functional HMI Verification: Remove the feeler gauge. The sensor output should revert to its idle (empty) state. Verify correct sensor readback on the edgebander HMI. Simulate a full pot condition by pressing the known-good test piece directly against the sensor face. Confirm the HMI clears the "Low Glue Level" alarm and displays "Glue Level OK".
7 Reassembly & Production Validation: Apply a continuous bead of high-temp RTV silicone to the cover plate gasket. Reinstall the cover plate and torque fasteners to 6 Nm in a crisscross pattern. Remove all LOTO devices and energize the machine. Initiate a manual glue refill to ~80% capacity. Run a 5-minute continuous edgebanding cycle while monitoring the glue level readout for flickering or false alarms.
