Purpose

To verify and adjust the parallelism between the bed height and the drum on a wide belt sander. A misaligned bed causes uneven stock removal, tapered thickness, and premature belt wear. This procedure ensures the bed is level relative to the drum within 0.002" per foot of drum width, delivering consistent finish quality and prolonging machine life.

Scope

This standard applies to all single‑, double‑, and multi‑head wide belt sanders in the facility with a rigid bed design. Includes both contact drum and combination head configurations. Excludes machines with floating bed or constant‑pressure feed systems. Intended for maintenance technicians and qualified operators. Frequency: quarterly or after any bed or drum service.

  • LOTOPerform lockout/tagout on the main electrical disconnect. Verify zero energy before opening any guards or accessing the drum area.
  • PPEWear safety glasses, hearing protection, and cut‑resistant gloves. Dust mask required if residual dust is present.
  • HZEnsure dust collection system is off and the drum has fully stopped before reaching inside the machine. Wait 5 minutes after shutdown for the drum to cool.
  • ERGUse a two‑person lift for the straightedge if longer than 6 ft. Avoid pinch points between the bed and the drum.

  • Feeler gauge set (0.001–0.025 in range)
  • Precision straightedge — at least 1 m longer than the drum width (e.g., 60 in for 48 in drum)
  • Dial indicator with magnetic base (0.001 in resolution) or digital micrometer
  • Allen keys / combination wrenches for bed adjustment bolts
  • Torque wrench (if specific torque values are listed in the machine manual)
  • Clean, lint‑free rags and isopropyl alcohol for surface cleaning
  • Permanent marker and PM log sheet

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/tagout the main electrical disconnect. Verify zero energy using a voltmeter. Remove or fully tension release the sanding belt so the drum is exposed and freely rotatable by hand.
2 Thoroughly clean the bed surface and the drum with isopropyl alcohol and a lint‑free cloth. Remove all dust, resin, and belt residue. Any debris will create false readings.
3 Place the precision straightedge lengthwise across the bed so its edge contacts the full width. Position it directly under the drum centerline. Tape it down securely to prevent movement.
4 Using the feeler gauge (or dial indicator with probe contacting the drum body), measure the gap between the straightedge and the drum at three points: left (1 in from edge), center, and right (1 in from opposite edge). Record each measurement.
5 Calculate the variation: max difference between any two points. Acceptable tolerance is 0.002" per foot of drum width. Example: 48 in drum allows max 0.008" spread. If within spec, document and proceed to step 8.
6 If out of tolerance, loosen lock nuts on the bed adjustment bolts (typically at the four corners). Turn each bolt incrementally: raising the bed reduces the gap, lowering increases it. Adjust the side that reads high first. Re‑tighten lock nuts finger‑tight.
7 Re‑measure all three points. Repeat adjustment (step 6) until the variation is ≤0.002"/ft. Once achieved, torque lock nuts to the machine manufacturer’s specification (if available) or tighten firmly in a cross‑pattern sequence.
8 Remove the straightedge. Reinstall the sanding belt, apply correct tension, and remove LOTO. Run a test piece (e.g., 2 ft wide, 4 ft long) at normal feed speed. Inspect for uniform scratch pattern and no sniping. Accept if thickness varies ≤0.005" across part width.
