Edgebander Glue Scraper Holder Alignment

This procedure covers the precision alignment of the glue scraper holder assembly on industrial edgebanders. Proper alignment ensures consistent glue spread across the panel edge, minimizes waste, reduces blade wear, and prevents glue buildup that can cause machine jams or burn marks.

Purpose

To establish a repeatable standard for adjusting the glue scraper holder on edgebanders in order to achieve a consistent glue line thickness (~0.2–0.4 mm), eliminate streaking or overdosing, and prevent premature scraper blade wear. A correctly aligned holder also reduces the risk of glue migrating into the machine's bearings and guide rails.

Scope

Applies to all edgebanders equipped with a mechanically adjustable glue scraper assembly, including Homag, Biesse, SCM, and Brandt models. Covers the standard two-bolt holder found in machines using EVA or PUR hotmelt adhesives. Does not cover pneumatic or servo‑motorized scraper systems; refer to machine‑specific manual for those variants.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout: Disconnect all power sources (electrical, pneumatic, thermal) and secure with a personal lock before any access to the glue station. Verify zero energy state with a qualified electrician.
  • BURNHot Surface Hazard: The glue pot and scraper holder can reach 180–200 °C. Wait until the glue pot temperature drops below 50 °C before touching any metal surfaces. Use heat-resistant gloves rated for >200 °C.
  • CUTSharp Blade: The scraper blade has a razor edge. Handle by the holder only. Use cut‑resistant gloves (ANSI A4 or higher) when cleaning or replacing the blade.
  • CHEMSolvent Handling: Use only the cleaning solvent recommended by the edgebander manufacturer (e.g., methyl ethyl ketone or isopropyl alcohol). Work in a ventilated area; avoid skin contact. Dispose of rags in a fire‑resistant container.

  • Replacement scraper blade (if edge is worn or chipped)
  • Heat‑resistant gloves (rated >200 °C)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout & Cooldown: Perform full lockout/tagout per facility policy. Allow the glue pot to cool until the temperature display reads ≤50 °C. Verify zero energy state with a qualified electrician.
2 Remove Scraper Holder Cover: Using a 4 mm hex key, remove the three M4 cap screws securing the clear plastic or metal cover over the scraper assembly. Place the cover and screws in a clean tray.
3 Visual Inspection & Cleaning: Inspect the scraper blade for chips, wear, or pitting. Using a lint‑free wipe dampened with approved solvent, gently remove all accumulated glue from the holder, blade, and adjacent areas. Take care around the sharp edge. If the blade is worn, replace it now (follow blade replacement procedure in machine manual).
4 Loosen Holder Bolts: Using a 5 mm hex key, loosen the two M8 bolts that secure the scraper holder block. Turn each bolt 1/4 turn counter‑clockwise — do not remove fully. The holder should now be free to slide vertically and pivot slightly.
5 Set Gap with Feeler Gauge: Insert a 0.15 mm feeler gauge between the scraper blade tip and the pressure roller (or the reference surface). Adjust the holder position by hand until a light, uniform drag is felt on the gauge. For a brand‑new blade, target 0.10 mm; for a blade with moderate wear, 0.20 mm is acceptable. The gap should be even across the full width of the blade.
6 Tighten Bolts to Torque: Remove the feeler gauge. Using a torque wrench set to 10 N·m (refer to machine manual; typical range is 8–12 N·m), tighten the two M8 bolts in a crisscross pattern. Re‑insert the feeler gauge at multiple points to confirm the gap has not shifted. If it has, loosen and repeat step 5.
7 Reinstall Cover: Place the scraper holder cover back and secure with the three M4 screws. Tighten to 3 N·m using the 4 mm hex key and torque wrench.
8 Test Run & Verification: Remove lockout/tagout. Reconnect power and heat the glue pot to operating temperature (typically 180–200 °C). Run a test panel of the standard substrate and edgeband material. Inspect the glue line: it should be continuous, 0.2–0.4 mm thick, with no drips or dry spots. If adjustment is needed, repeat the procedure from step 3 (with cooldown).
