Purpose

To establish a standardized, repeatable procedure for inspecting industrial dust collection systems to identify and mitigate combustible dust hazards. This inspection ensures compliance with NFPA 652 (Standard on the Fundamentals of Combustible Dust) and reduces the risk of dust deflagration events that can cause catastrophic damage, injury, or loss of life.

Scope

This procedure applies to all dry dust collection systems handling combustible particulate solids in manufacturing, woodworking, food processing, chemical, and pharmaceutical facilities. It covers fixed baghouse collectors, cartridge collectors, cyclone separators, and supplementary vacuum systems. This inspection does not replace a full Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) required by NFPA 652 but serves as a periodic operational check to be performed at intervals defined by the facility’s DHA.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOPerform lockout/tagout on all electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical energy sources before opening any collector doors or accessing ductwork. Verify zero energy state with a multimeter.
  • PPE1Wear arc‑rated clothing (minimum CAT 2), N95 or P100 respirator, safety glasses, and steel‑toed boots. Use non‑sparking tools when cleaning or removing dust.
  • HOTWNo hot work (welding, grinding, open flame) within 35 feet of the dust collector unless a hot work permit is issued and fire watch is stationed.
  • STATEnsure personal grounding (e.g., wrist strap) and bonding cables are used when working near conductive components inside the collection system to prevent static discharge.
  • CONFIf entry into the collector housing or hopper is required, follow confined space entry procedures (atmospheric testing, retrieval system, standby attendant).

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Pre‑inspection preparation. Review system drawings, manufacturer manuals, and previous inspection reports. Verify the facility’s NFPA 652 Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) is current. Confirm the inspection interval defined by the DHA. Gather all required tools, PPE, and checklists.
2 Lockout/tagout. Shut down the dust collection system. Isolate electrical supply at the motor control centre (MCC) and disconnect pneumatic/mechanical linkages. Apply personal lockout devices and tags. Use a multimeter to verify zero voltage at the disconnect. For systems with stored energy (e.g., pressurized air), bleed all lines.
3 Visual inspection of ductwork. Walk the entire duct run from pickup points to collector. Look for corrosion holes, gaps at joints, missing fasteners, or crushed sections. Use a flashlight and mirror to inspect the interior of horizontal runs and elbows for dust accumulation. Measure dust layer thickness; any accumulation exceeding 1/32 inch (0.8 mm) must be cleaned and noted per NFPA 652.
4 Inspect filter housings and hoppers. Open access doors carefully (dust may fall). Examine filter bags or cartridges for tears, improper sealing, or clogging. Check the hopper for dust bridging or funnel‑flow conditions. Inspect rotary valves for wear, proper rotation, and alignment. Verify that explosion relief vents or panels are unobstructed, properly labelled, and have not been painted over.
5 Grounding and bonding verification. Using a multimeter set to ohms (Ω), measure resistance between each conductive component (duct, housing, hopper, bin) and the facility ground. All readings must be ≤ 10 ohms. Inspect bonding jumpers across flexible connections; replace any corroded or broken jumpers. Document every reading.
6 Housekeeping assessment. Walk the perimeter of the dust collector and adjacent equipment up to 35 feet. Check floors, beams, pipes, and electrical enclosures for fugitive combustible dust. Record the layer thickness of any accumulation. Dust layers > 1/32 inch require immediate cleaning. Log deficiencies for corrective action.
7 Document findings and assign corrective actions. Complete the inspection checklist with photos of defects. Enter readings and observations into the facility’s CMMS (e.g., ServiceGrid). Assign work orders for any repairs (e.g., replace filter bags, seal duct joints, repair bonding). Update the DHA if new hazards are identified. Obtain electronic sign‑off from the maintenance supervisor.
8 Return to service. Remove all lockout/tagout devices in the reverse order of application. Restore power and compressed air. Restart the system and verify normal operating pressures (using magnehelic gauge) and airflow. Collectively check for abnormal vibration, dust leakage at gaskets, or unusual noise. Confirm the system is running safely.
