Edgebander Preheat Oven Temperature Calibration

Precise temperature control in the preheat oven is critical for adhesive activation and edgeband quality. This SOP details the procedure to verify and adjust the oven temperature setpoint using a contact thermocouple, ensuring the platen surface temperature matches the PID controller reading within ±5°C.

Purpose

To establish a standardized method for calibrating the preheat oven temperature on an industrial edgebander. Proper calibration ensures the glue line reaches the correct activation temperature, preventing cold glue (weak bond) or scorching (burned substrate). This procedure also reduces adhesive waste and extends heater element life by verifying that the PID controller is accurately regulating the platen surface.

Scope

This procedure applies to all single- and double-sided edgebanders equipped with a resistive heating preheat oven section (models: HOMAG KAL 310, SCM Olimpic 500, Biesse Akron 1400, and equivalent). It covers the temperature verification of the main preheat platen (contact heating) and the optional pre-heat air knives if present. This SOP does not cover glue pot temperature calibration (separate SOP) or infrared heating systems.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOPerform full lockout/tagout on the main electrical disconnect and compressed air supply before opening any protective guards. Verify zero energy state with a rated voltmeter.
  • PPEWear heat-resistant gloves (rated for 250°C minimum) when handling thermocouple clips or contacting the platen. Use safety glasses to protect against hot adhesive splatter.
  • BURNThe preheat platen can exceed 200°C. Allow 15 minutes cool-down after de-energizing before touching any metal surfaces inside the oven enclosure.

  • Digital multimeter with Type K thermocouple probe (resolution 0.1°C, accuracy ±1°C)
  • High-temperature polyimide tape (rated 260°C continuous)
  • 5 mm hex T-handle driver
  • PID controller manual for the edgebander model
  • Calibration log sheet (Ryxen PM-EDGE-001 or equivalent)
  • Contact thermometer for verification if available

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout and Isolate Energy: Shut down the edgebander via the main control panel. Disconnect the main electrical disconnect switch and lock out with personal lock. Close and lock the compressed air ball valve. Verify zero voltage at the heater contactor using a rated voltmeter.
2 Access the Preheat Oven Assembly: Remove the access panels covering the preheat oven section. Use a 5 mm hex key to unfasten the four M6 screws securing the guard. Place panels safely aside.
3 Attach Contact Thermocouple: Clean the platen surface with a dry cloth to remove adhesive residue. Apply a strip of high-temperature tape to the center of the glue web area (where the edgebanding contacts). Attach the Type K thermocouple bead firmly against the platen using additional tape. Ensure full metal contact.
4 Power On and Set Target Temperature: Remove lockout/tagout and re-energize the machine per safe start-up. Navigate the PID controller to the setpoint screen. Set the target temperature to 180°C (356°F) (or the value specified by the adhesive manufacturer). Allow 10 minutes for the platen to reach steady-state.
5 Record Steady-State Temperature: After stabilization, read the actual temperature on the multimeter. Record both the PID controller display and the contact thermocouple reading. Acceptable tolerance is ±5°C. If the measured value is outside this range, proceed to Step 6.
6 Adjust PID Offset or Initiate Auto-Tune: If deviation exceeds ±5°C, enter the PID controller menu (refer to manual). Adjust the temperature offset (bias) by the difference (e.g., if measured is 172°C vs setpoint 180°C, increase offset +8°C). Alternatively, run the auto-tune cycle if supported. Re-check after stabilization.
7 Document and Restore: Once the temperature is within tolerance, record the final readings on the PM log sheet. Remove the thermocouple and tape. Reinstall all safety panels and fasten screws. Remove lockout/tagout. Run a test panel to verify glue line quality (check for uniform melt, no cold spots).
