Sliding Table Saw Cross Cut Fence Calibration
This procedure covers the alignment and calibration of the cross cut fence on a sliding table saw. Proper fence perpendicularity ensures repeatable square cuts, minimises material waste, and prevents binding or kickback. Tolerances are based on CSA Z432 and WorkSafeBC standards for woodworking machinery.
The cross cut fence (travelling table fence) must be precisely perpendicular to the saw blade plane to produce accurate cross cuts and mitres. A drift of even 0.1 mm over a 300 mm cut can cause binding, tear-out, and dimensional non-conformance in finished parts. This calibration re-establishes fence-to-blade perpendicularity within the manufacturer's tolerance band (typically ≤ 0.05 mm over 1 m traverse).
This SOP applies to all horizontally sliding table saws with a dedicated cross cut fence assembly, including but not limited to Altendorf, Martin, Felder, SCM, and similar industrial panel saws. It covers the travelling table fence only — not the rip fence, scoring blade, or arbor alignment. This procedure should be performed quarterly or immediately following any reported cut quality issue.
- Complete machine lockout / tagout (LOTO) per CSA Z460. Isolate and verify zero energy state at the main disconnect. The saw blade must be proven stationary with a live-dead-live tester before any adjustments or cleaning.
- Wear impact-rated safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1), cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A4) for handling sharp edges, and steel-toed boots. Hearing protection not required during static calibration but keep available for any test cutting.
- Use only non‑sparking brass or plastic feeler gauges when working near electrical enclosures. Keep all tools clear of the blade arbor area. Do not place hands inside the blade housing while the machine is energised.
- When using solvent for cleaning, follow the manufacturer's SDS. Ensure adequate ventilation – open overhead exhaust or use a portable extraction unit rated for VOCs.
- Precision engineer’s square — grade 2 or better, 300 mm leg, certified to DIN 875
- Dial indicator with magnetic base — 0.01 mm resolution, 25 mm travel
- Feeler gauge set — 0.02 mm to 0.50 mm, preferably tapered blade style
- Hex key set — metric and imperial (as required by saw manufacturer)
- Torque wrench — 2–25 Nm range, NIST-traceable
- Lint-free wipes and manufacturer-approved solvent (e.g., isopropyl alcohol 99%)
- ISO 68 way oil or manufacturer-specified slide lubricant
- Marker or machinist's blue dye for transfer marking (optional)
