Purpose

To establish a repeatable, documented procedure for inspecting, sharpening, and replacing the pneumatic or servo-driven trim saw blades on CNC edgebanders. Proper maintenance of trim saws prevents chip-out, reduces glue-line visibility, avoids spindle bearing overload, and maintains cycle-time efficiency.

Scope

Applies to all CNC edgebander trim saw stations (pre-mill, finish trim, top/bottom trim) in the millwork and panel processing departments. This PM log covers both HSS (High-Speed Steel) and carbide-tipped trim saw blades with diameters ranging from 80 mm to 150 mm.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOComplete Lockout/Tagout on the edgebander main electrical disconnect and pneumatic supply. Verify zero energy state by attempting a cycle start before opening any guards.
  • PPEImpact-resistant safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1), cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A5), and hearing protection (NRR 25 dB). Forearm guards recommended when handling sharp tooling.
  • HOTBlades may be hot immediately after extended production runs. Allow a 5-minute cool-down period before handling or performing measurements.
  • CRUSHUse the blade lock mechanism or a wooden wedge to immobilize the arbor during nut removal. Never hold the blade with bare hands to counteract arbor torque.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Torx T20/T25 driver or arbor-specific wrench
  • Torque wrench (in-lb) with appropriate hex/insert bit
  • Dial caliper or micrometer (accurate to 0.001 inch / 0.025mm)
  • Edgebander trim saw sharpening fixture or off-machine precision grinding service
  • Replacement trim saw blades (OEM spec - verify bore diameter and tooth geometry)
  • Solvent-based cleaner (e.g., acetone or industrial resin dissolver)
  • Lint-free shop towels
  • Pressurized air gun (max 30 PSI for cleaning)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Preparation & Lockout: Don required PPE. Shut down the edgebander using the master control panel. Execute LOTO on the main electrical disconnect and pneumatic supply valves. Wait 60 seconds for residual air pressure to bleed down.
2 Access Trim Saw Station: Open the top enclosure hood of the edgebander. Locate the trim saw station(s). For Homag/Biesse/Ima machines, release the quarter-turn fasteners or hex-head bolts securing the access panel.
3 Remove Blade: Using the arbor lock mechanism, immobilize the saw shaft. Loosen the arbor nut with the appropriate wrench. Note the order of any washers or spacers. Carefully lift the blade off the arbor. Place immediately into a labeled blade carrier or safe tray.
4 Inspect Arbor & Housing: Clean the arbor flange, nut, and spindle seat with solvent and a lint-free towel. Inspect the arbor for wear, burrs, or runout (max 0.001 inch TIR). Check the spindle bearings for axial play or rough rotation.
5 Inspect & Measure Blade: Measure the blade diameter. Record thickness at the tooth tip. Inspect for cracks, chipped carbide tips, or missing teeth. If the blade diameter is below the minimum spec or has more than 3 chipped tips, it must be sharpened or replaced.
6 Install/Reinstall Blade: Ensure correct blade rotation direction (usually clockwise for top trim, counter-clockwise for bottom trim). Slide blade onto arbor. Reinstall washers/spacers in the exact sequence recorded. Torque arbor nut to manufacturer specification (typically 15-25 ft-lb / 180-300 in-lb).
7 Set Blade Protrusion: Using the manual handwheel or electronic adjustment interface, set the blade protrusion. For standard panel stock (0.75 in / 18 mm), protrusion should be 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm above the panel surface. Verify with a feeler gauge or shim stock.
8 Test Cycle & Log: Remove all tools from the machine enclosure. Close and secure all access panels. Remove LOTO. Restore pneumatic and electrical power. Perform a test cycle with a scrap panel of standard thickness. Check trim quality. Log the task in ServiceGrid CMMS, including blade diameter before/after, serial number, and cycle count.
