Standard operating procedure for the routine inspection, debris removal, and clearance verification of facility roof drains, scuppers, and downspout entries to prevent water ponding, structural overloading, and interior water intrusion.
This procedure establishes a standardized method for clearing debris from roof drains, scuppers, and overflow ports to prevent water ponding, structural overloading, and interior water intrusion. Unobstructed drainage is a critical control point for roof asset integrity and workplace safety.
This SOP applies to all personnel assigned to facility maintenance tasks involving flat or low-slope roof drainage systems, including primary roof drains, overflow scuppers, and external downspout strainers. It covers visual inspection, manual debris removal, and post-clearing flow verification.
- Lockout / Tagout of any mechanical roof access hatch interlocks or powered roof-top equipment before stepping onto the roof membrane.
- Full-body harness and shock-absorbing lanyard must be attached to a certified roof anchor point if the roof edge is unprotected.
- Cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A4 minimum), safety glasses with side shields, and slip-resistant boots. Use rubber gloves if standing water is present.
- Use a mechanical lift (e.g., scissor lift with gutter-boom attachment) for ground-level scupper clearing if standing on a ladder exceeds 12 ft.
- Roof drain scoop or heavy-duty plastic trowel
- Contractor-grade trash bags (2-ply, 3 mil)
- Garden trowel or weeding knife for compacted sediment
- Bucket / pail (5-gallon) for collecting wet debris
- Rubber gloves / waterproof utility gloves
- Telescoping gutter wand or compressed air nozzle with blow gun
- Hose with nozzle / calibrated dump bucket for flow test
- Camera / smartphone with time-stamped photo app for documentation
