Purpose

To standardize the scoring saw height adjustment process, minimizing edge chipping and ensuring consistent cut quality across different panel materials. Adherence to this procedure reduces rework, extends blade life, and maintains machine reliability.

Scope

Applies to all beam saws in production with adjustable scoring saw height mechanisms — including Schelling, Giben, Homag, and equivalent models. Covers the adjustment required when transitioning between melamine‑coated particleboard (standard) and veneer‑faced panels. Does not cover blade replacement or alignment of the main saw arbor.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout the beam saw electrical and pneumatic circuits before removing any guards or accessing the scoring saw assembly. Confirm zero energy state per plant procedure.
  • PPEWear cut‑resistant gloves (ANSI A4 minimum) and impact‑rated safety glasses. Use steel‑toed footwear and hearing protection if operating near other machinery.
  • Scoring saw blades are extremely sharp. Use a blade stand or designated storage tray. Never hold the blade with bare hands.
  • !Torque all fasteners to manufacturer specification. Overtightening can crack the scoring saw flange or hub.
Required Tools & Materials
  • 4 mm hex key (ball‑end preferred for angled access)
  • Digital caliper (resolution 0.01 mm)
  • Feeler gauge set (0.10 mm – 0.50 mm)
  • Torque wrench with appropriate arbor nut socket
  • Sample material: one piece of melamine panel (≥200 mm length) and one piece of veneer panel (≥200 mm length)
  • Marking pen / whiteboard marker
  • Clean lint‑free cloth

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout / Tagout. Shut down the beam saw per plant LOTO procedure. Isolate electrical power and bleed pneumatic lines. Verify zero energy state. Attach personal lock and tag.
2 Remove scoring saw guard. Using a 4 mm hex key, remove the guard retaining screws. Lift the guard clear and place it in a designated parts tray. Do not lose the fasteners.
3 Measure current height. Place the digital caliper so its depth rod contacts the scoring saw tip (closest to the main saw). Zero the caliper at the table surface. Record the reading on the PM log sheet.
4 Adjust for material. Loosen the eccentric cam clamp bolt(s) with the 4 mm hex key. Rotate the eccentric cam: For melamine – target scoring saw tip 0.3–0.5 mm below the main saw tip. For veneer – target 0.5–0.8 mm below. Use the feeler gauge to verify the gap relative to a reference block. Tighten the clamp bolt(s) to the manufacturer’s specified torque (usually 8–12 N·m).
5 Reinstall guard and verify. Replace the scoring saw guard and hand‑tighten the screws. Torque to specification. Remove LOTO devices and power on the machine.
6 Test cuts. Feed the melamine sample through the beam saw at normal speed. Inspect the edge for chipping or scoring marks. Repeat with the veneer sample. If edge quality is unacceptable, repeat steps 3–4 with an incremental height adjustment of 0.05 mm. Record final setting and date in the PM log.
