Purpose

This procedure defines the correct method for measuring the gloss level (specular reflectance) of top coat finishes using a calibrated gloss meter. Consistent gloss measurement is critical for visual quality standards, customer specifications, and process control in paint and coating operations.

Scope

This SOP applies to all personnel performing gloss measurements on painted, powder-coated, or film-coated top coat surfaces in the finishing department, quality lab, or field inspection. It covers meter selection, calibration, surface preparation, measurement technique, and data recording. Excludes non‑topcoat substrates and in‑process wet samples.

  • PPEWear safety glasses when cleaning surfaces with isopropyl alcohol to prevent splash into eyes.
  • CHEMEnsure adequate ventilation if using solvents near the measurement area. Keep alcohol away from ignition sources.
  • DAMAGEHandle the gloss meter with care. Dropping or scratching the aperture can invalidate measurements. Always store in the protective case.
  • CALDo not use the calibration standard if it is scratched, dirty, or past its recertification date — verify traceability.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Gloss meter (e.g., BYK-Gardner micro-TRI-gloss, Elcometer 480, or equivalent)
  • Calibration standard (high-gloss tile, traceable to national standards, within certification window)
  • Lint-free microfiber or laboratory wipes (Kimwipes or equivalent)
  • Isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher) in a squeeze bottle with fine tip
  • Data sheet or digital recording device (tablet, field router, or ServiceGrid CMMS)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Inspect the gloss meter and calibration standard. Verify the meter is clean (no dust on aperture) and the standard is within its serialized recertification date. Do not proceed if the standard is damaged.
2 Power on the gloss meter. Allow it to complete its internal self-check (usually 10 seconds). The display should show "0.0 GU" or the last reading — do not use if an error code appears.
3 Select the correct measurement angle based on the expected gloss level: - 60° angle for general-purpose measurement (10–70 GU). - 20° angle for high-gloss surfaces (>70 GU). - 85° angle for matte/satin surfaces (<10 GU). Refer to the product specification sheet if unsure.
4 Clean the top coat surface. Dampen a lint-free wipe with isopropyl alcohol and gently wipe the area to be measured. Allow it to dry completely (15 seconds). Do not touch the cleaned area with bare fingers.
5 Place the meter flat against the calibration standard. Press and hold the measure button until the reading stabilizes. Compare the displayed value to the certified value printed on the standard — must be within ±1 GU. If outside tolerance, recalibrate per the manufacturer's manual.
6 Position the meter on the prepared surface. Ensure the aperture is fully flush with the surface and no light leaks from the edges. Apply gentle, even pressure — do not tilt or rock the meter.
7 Press the measurement button. Hold steady for 2 seconds until the reading locks. Record the gloss unit (GU) value immediately on the data sheet or in the CMMS field, including the angle used.
8 Repeat the measurement at three (3) distinct locations on the same panel or part to assess uniformity. Space readings at least 50 mm apart. If the specification calls for a single average, calculate the mean and record it.
9 After all measurements, power off the meter. Clean the aperture and the calibration standard with a dry lint-free wipe. Return the meter and standard to their protective case. Store in a climate‑controlled environment (15–30°C, <70% RH).
10 If using ServiceGrid, attach the reading(s) to the equipment asset record under the "Top Coat Gloss" data field. Notify the quality supervisor if any reading deviates more than ±3 GU from the target specification.
