Finish Adhesion Cross Hatch Test

Standard operating procedure for performing a cross hatch adhesion test on painted or coated surfaces to evaluate adhesion quality per ASTM D3359 (or ISO 2409). This test is critical for verifying coating integrity on industrial equipment, structural steel, and component surfaces.

Purpose

To quantitatively evaluate the adhesion of a coating to its substrate by cutting a lattice pattern through the coating film, applying an adhesive tape, and removing it rapidly. The amount of coating removed is compared to ASTM D3359 classification ratings (5B–0B). This test provides immediate feedback on surface preparation quality, coating compatibility, and cure development.

Scope

This procedure applies to any painted, powder‑coated, or liquid‑applied coating on rigid metallic or plastic substrates commonly found in industrial maintenance, heavy equipment, and structural steel. It is not intended for coatings on flexible substrates (e.g., membranes, fabrics) or for coating thicknesses below 20 µm or above 500 µm without special cutter selection.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOIf testing near rotating or energized equipment, perform lockout/tagout before accessing the coated surface.
  • PPEWear chemical‑resistant gloves and safety glasses when handling solvents for cleaning. Use cut‑resistant gloves when using the cross hatch cutter.
  • FUMEIf solvent cleaning is required, work in a well‑ventilated area away from ignition sources. Ensure adequate respiratory protection if vapours exceed exposure limits.

  • Cross hatch cutter (1 mm spacing for coatings <50 µm; 2 mm spacing for 50–250 µm; 3 mm for >250 µm)
  • Adhesion test tape (Permacel 99, Scotch 898, or ASTM D3359‑compliant tape)
  • Soft brush or compressed air to remove debris
  • Magnifier (10×) or inspection lamp for rating the lattice
  • Clean, lint‑free cloth and isopropyl alcohol (or recommended solvent) for cleaning test area
  • Ruler or micrometer to measure coating thickness (if required for cutter selection)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Prepare the test area. Visually inspect the coated surface for defects, contamination, or irregularities. Clean a 50 mm × 50 mm area with a dry cloth or solvent (e.g., isopropyl alcohol) if needed. Allow to fully dry. Measure coating thickness if unsure of cutter spacing.
2 Select and set cutter spacing. Choose blade spacing: 1 mm for coatings under 50 µm, 2 mm for 50–250 µm, 3 mm for coatings over 250 µm. Ensure blades are sharp and undamaged. Replace if needed.
3 Make the first set of cuts. Place the cutter perpendicular to the coated surface, apply steady, even pressure, and draw six parallel cuts approximately 20 mm long, spaced according to selected spacing. Cut through the coating to the substrate. Wipe away any loose debris.
4 Make the second set of cuts (lattice). Rotate the cutter 90° and repeat step 3, making six cuts perpendicular to the first set, producing a 5×5 (or 6×6) grid pattern. Lightly brush or blow away all loose coating flakes. Do not touch the lattice after cleaning.
5 Apply and remove adhesion tape. Press a 75 mm length of tape firmly over the lattice, smoothing with a fingertip or eraser to ensure full contact. Wait 30–60 seconds (or per tape manufacturer instructions). Grasp the free end and pull it back sharply at an angle of ~180°, removing the tape in one rapid motion.
6 Rate and document the result. Examine the lattice under good light using a magnifier. Compare the area of coating removed to the ASTM D3359 classification scale (5B = no removal; 4B = trace; 3B = small flakes; 2B = moderate; 1B = large flakes; 0B = complete removal). Record the rating, location, any anomalies, and operator initials in the inspection log.
