Finish Adhesion Cross Hatch Test
Standard operating procedure for performing a cross hatch adhesion test on painted or coated surfaces to evaluate adhesion quality per ASTM D3359 (or ISO 2409). This test is critical for verifying coating integrity on industrial equipment, structural steel, and component surfaces.
To quantitatively evaluate the adhesion of a coating to its substrate by cutting a lattice pattern through the coating film, applying an adhesive tape, and removing it rapidly. The amount of coating removed is compared to ASTM D3359 classification ratings (5B–0B). This test provides immediate feedback on surface preparation quality, coating compatibility, and cure development.
This procedure applies to any painted, powder‑coated, or liquid‑applied coating on rigid metallic or plastic substrates commonly found in industrial maintenance, heavy equipment, and structural steel. It is not intended for coatings on flexible substrates (e.g., membranes, fabrics) or for coating thicknesses below 20 µm or above 500 µm without special cutter selection.
- If testing near rotating or energized equipment, perform lockout/tagout before accessing the coated surface.
- Wear chemical‑resistant gloves and safety glasses when handling solvents for cleaning. Use cut‑resistant gloves when using the cross hatch cutter.
- If solvent cleaning is required, work in a well‑ventilated area away from ignition sources. Ensure adequate respiratory protection if vapours exceed exposure limits.
- Cross hatch cutter (1 mm spacing for coatings <50 µm; 2 mm spacing for 50–250 µm; 3 mm for >250 µm)
- Adhesion test tape (Permacel 99, Scotch 898, or ASTM D3359‑compliant tape)
- Soft brush or compressed air to remove debris
- Magnifier (10×) or inspection lamp for rating the lattice
- Clean, lint‑free cloth and isopropyl alcohol (or recommended solvent) for cleaning test area
- Ruler or micrometer to measure coating thickness (if required for cutter selection)
