NFPA 110 Emergency Generator Load Bank Testing Log
This log provides a standardized record for load bank testing of emergency standby generators as required by NFPA 110 (Level 1 & Level 2 systems). It captures critical electrical readings, coolant parameters, and corrective actions to ensure generator reliability during a utility failure.
NFPA 110, Standard for Emergency and Standby Power Systems, mandates routine load bank testing to verify that emergency generators can sustain rated load without overheating or failing. This log captures ambient conditions, coolant temperature, oil pressure, frequency, voltage, load bank amperage, and post-test stabilisation. Any deviation from manufacturer tolerances or NFPA specified limits must be documented in the Corrective Action Log.
- Lockout/tagout of automatic transfer switch (ATS) and generator control panel – confirm zero energy before connecting load bank.
- Arc‑rated PPE (gloves, face shield, coverall) when connecting load bank cables. Hearing protection near operating generator.
- Portable load bank (resistive/reactive) rated for generator kW capacity, calibrated thermocouple for exhaust temperature, and non‑contact tachometer.
Inspection / Load Bank Test Matrix
| Status (P/F) | Inspection Item / Task | Tolerance / Threshold | Actual Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| [ ] Pass [ ] Fail | Coolant temperature after 30 min at 100% load | ≤ 210°F (99°C) or per manufacturer spec | _________________ |
| [ ] Pass [ ] Fail | Oil pressure maintained under load | 40–60 PSI (or mfr spec) | _________________ |
| [ ] Pass [ ] Fail | Output frequency at rated load | 60 ± 0.5 Hz | _________________ |
| [ ] Pass [ ] Fail | Voltage regulation (L–L and L–N) | ±5% of nominal (e.g., 208/120V) | _________________ |
| [ ] Pass [ ] Fail | Load bank amperage (each phase) | Within 10% of calculated ampacity | _________________ |
| [ ] Pass [ ] Fail | Exhaust temperature (post-load stabilisation) | ≤ 1,050°F (565°C) or mfr limit | _________________ |
| [ ] Pass [ ] Fail | Coolant level & condition (visual) | Full, no visible debris | [ ] OK [ ] Not OK |
