Purpose

To verify that the gloss meter is measuring accurately against a certified reference tile. Regular verification ensures that all subsequent gloss readings reported for production or incoming inspection are reliable and traceable. This SOP aligns with ISO 2813 and ASTM D523 standard geometries.

Scope

This procedure applies to all hand‑held gloss meters used in the plant at 60° geometry (primary), and may be extended to 20° and 85° heads using the appropriate reference tiles. It covers daily or weekly spot checks as well as full verification after any repair, drop, or environmental change.

Safety Precautions
  • HANDHandle reference tiles by the edges only. Oils or scratches on the measurement surface will degrade accuracy and may require costly recertification.
  • CHEMIsopropyl alcohol is flammable. Use in a well‑ventilated area away from ignition sources. Allow full evaporation before measuring.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Certified gloss reference tile (high‑gloss, typically 90–100 GU or as per manufacturer)
  • Optional: second tile at mid or low gloss (for multi‑geometry verification)
  • Microfibre cloth, clean and lint‑free
  • Isopropyl alcohol (≥70%) in a squeeze bottle with a fine tip
  • Compressed air duster (optional, for loose debris)
  • Gloss meter with known 60° geometry
  • Calibration certificate for the reference tile (showing certified GU value and date)
  • Verification log sheet or digital CMMS (e.g. ServiceGrid)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Power On & Geometry Select. Turn on the gloss meter and set to the 60° measurement geometry (or the angle specified in your quality plan). Allow the instrument to complete its self‑test and warm‑up — typically 1–2 minutes but refer to the manufacturer’s manual.
2 Inspect & Clean Reference Tile. Hold the tile by its edges under a bright light. If smudges, dust, or fingerprints are visible, spray a small amount of isopropyl alcohol onto the microfibre cloth (not directly on the tile) and wipe gently in one direction. Follow with a dry section of the cloth. Blow off any remaining lint with compressed air if available. Wait 30 seconds for any residual alcohol to evaporate.
3 Record Certified Value. Locate the calibration certificate for the tile. Note the certified gloss value (e.g. 95.4 GU at 60°) and the tolerance band (±1.0 GU or per instrument spec). Write this on your verification log.
4 Take Initial Measurement. Place the gloss meter flat on the clean tile, ensuring the measurement aperture is fully covered and no ambient light can enter. Press the measurement button. Record the displayed GU value.
5 Repeat for Uniformity. Move the meter to three different positions on the tile (centre, left, right) and take a reading at each. This checks whether the tile is uniformly clean and the meter responds consistently.
6 Compare to Tolerance. Calculate the average of the three readings. If the deviation from the certified value is within the instrument’s acceptance tolerance (usually ±1.0 GU for high‑gloss, ±1.5 GU for mid‑gloss), mark the verification as PASS. Otherwise proceed to step 7.
7 Out‑of‑Tolerance Action. Re‑clean the tile and repeat steps 2–6. If failure persists, perform a full instrument calibration (zero and standard) as per the manufacturer’s instructions. If still out of spec, contact the instrument service provider. Do not use the gloss meter for production until a pass is achieved.
8 Documentation. Record the date, instrument serial number, tile ID, certified value, measured values (all three), average, deviation, and pass/fail result in your verification log. If using a digital CMMS like ServiceGrid, attach a photo of the tile and the certificate for full traceability.
