Purpose

The purpose of this SOP is to establish a repeatable, safe procedure for lubricating pneumatic tools and draining inline air filters. Correct lubrication reduces internal friction, prevents scoring of cylinders, and maintains consistent tool performance. Regular filter draining eliminates water and particulates that can cause corrosion, valve stickiness, and premature seal failure.

Scope

This procedure applies to all portable pneumatic tools (impact wrenches, grinders, drills, sanders, etc.) and stationary pneumatic equipment connected to a centralized compressed air system with a filter‑regulator‑lubricator (FRL) unit. It covers the lubrication of the tool via the inline lubricator and the manual draining of the filter bowl. This SOP does not cover replacing filter elements, rebuilding lubricators, or servicing the compressor itself.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout (LOTO) the air supply shut‑off valve before performing any work. Always verify zero pressure by pulling the tool trigger after isolation.
  • PPEWear safety glasses, hearing protection, and appropriate gloves. Air lines can eject debris; lubricant spray may be present during pressure release.
  • BIOCondensate from filters may contain oil and metal fines. Dispose of collected fluids per local environmental regulations. Avoid skin contact with used lubricant.
  • BURNSurfaces of the tool and FRL unit may be hot after prolonged operation. Allow cooling time or wear heat‑resistant gloves.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Pneumatic tool oil – ISO VG 32 (non‑detergent, non‑foaming) or manufacturer‑specified equivalent
  • Clean, lint‑free wipes (e.g., KimTech or equivalent)
  • Small plastic or metal container for capturing filter drain fluid (500 mL capacity)
  • Lockout/tagout kit (padlock, hasp, tag) for the air shut‑off valve
  • Personal protective equipment (safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection)
  • Optional: drip tray, funnel, compressed air blow gun for cleaning

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout and Depressurize. Identify the shut‑off valve for the air supply serving the tool. Close the valve completely. Activate the tool’s trigger to release any trapped pressure from the hose. Attach a lockout padlock and a tag stating “Do Not Operate – Maintenance in Progress.”
2 Locate the Inline Filter and Lubricator. Follow the air line from the shut‑off valve to the FRL unit. The filter is the first module (usually a transparent bowl with a drain valve at the bottom). The lubricator is the last module (has a sight glass and an adjustable drip‑feed mechanism).
3 Drain the Inline Filter. Place a container under the filter bowl drain valve. Open the drain valve (typically a quarter‑turn ball valve or a push‑to‑drain button). Allow all accumulated water, oil, and debris to drain completely into the container. Close the drain valve firmly. Wipe the outside of the bowl with a clean cloth to remove any residual moisture.
4 Refill the Lubricator Reservoir. Unscrew the top cap or fill plug of the lubricator. Add pneumatic tool oil (ISO VG 32) up to the MAX fill line indicated on the sight glass. Do not overfill. Replace and hand‑tighten the cap. Check that the cap’s O‑ring is clean and seated correctly.
5 Adjust the Lubrication Rate. Open the shut‑off valve slowly to repressurize the line. With the tool operating at normal speed, observe the drip rate in the lubricator sight glass. Turn the adjustment screw (typically a slotted needle valve) until the drip rate reaches 1–2 drops per minute (refer to tool manufacturer’s recommendation). Let the tool run for 30 seconds to stabilize the oil delivery.
6 Perform Function Test and Record. Operate the tool through its full range of motion. Listen for abnormal sounds (chattering, sputtering) and inspect for oil leaks at fittings or the lubricator. Confirm the filter bowl remains dry. Record the service date, technician name, filter condition, lubricant type and batch number, and any observations on the equipment’s preventive maintenance (PM) log sheet or within ServiceGrid.
