MDF Core Moisture Content Post Press
Establishes a standardized, repeatable procedure for measuring and verifying MDF core moisture immediately after the hot press cycle. Ensures dimensional stability, bond integrity, and compliance with CSA O118 / ANSI A208.2 while minimizing rejects and press-side adjustment time.
To provide a clear, repeatable method for accurately measuring the moisture content of MDF cores immediately after the hot press cycle. This procedure enables operators and QC personnel to detect moisture deviations early, prevent over-drying or under-drying, maintain panel flatness and internal bond strength, and ensure every board meets the target moisture specification before moving downstream to sanding, finishing, or shipping. Adherence to this SOP reduces rework, stabilizes press throughput, and aligns with CSA O118 / ANSI A208.2 quality standards.
This procedure applies to all MDF core samples collected from the post-press discharge line — covering every product thickness, resin formulation, and press configuration used on site. It defines the sampling frequency (minimum every 5th panel or per QC plan), the measurement technique using calibrated pin-type or pinless moisture meters, data recording requirements, and the acceptance criteria (target range 5-9 % MC). Exceptions are noted for start-up, grade changes, and process upset conditions where additional samples are required. This SOP is intended for press operators, QC technicians, and maintenance personnel.
- Lockout/tagout the press discharge conveyor and sample saw at the source before accessing the cutting area or clearing jams. Verify zero energy state per plant LOTO procedure.
- Heat-resistant gloves (rated ≥ 120 °C), ANSI Z87.1 rated safety glasses, hearing protection (minimum NRR 25 dB), and steel-toed boots. MDF cores exit the press at 70–85 °C and can cause instant skin burns.
- Freshly pressed MDF retains core temperatures up to 90 °C. Use insulated sample tongs or heat-resistant gloves when handling. Never place hot samples directly on combustible surfaces or near flammable dust.
- Cutting samples generates fine MDF dust containing resin and wood particles. Operate the sample saw with integrated dust extraction. Wear a P2/N95 respirator if airborne dust exceeds occupational exposure limits.
- Pin-type moisture meter (e.g., Wagner or Delmhorst) with insulated pins, rated for hot boards
- Pinless moisture meter (optional, for non-destructive surface reference checks)
- Calibration block or verification standard for the moisture meter
- Heat-resistant insulated gloves (rated ≥ 120 °C)
- Sample saw with dust extraction (integrated or portable)
- Infrared thermometer (non-contact, range 0–200 °C)
- Data log sheet or digital tablet with ServiceGrid CMMS open to the PM checklist
- Permanent marker and high-temperature labelling tape
- Sample collection tray (metal or heat-resistant composite)
- Clean dry cloth for pin cleaning after each test
