Purpose

The purpose of this standard operating procedure is to define the exact sequence of operations for safely replacing scroll chuck jaws on a manual or CNC metalworking lathe and subsequently truing the gripping surfaces to ensure concentricity within 0.001" (0.025 mm) TIR. Adherence to this procedure prevents catastrophic workpiece ejection, reduces scrapped parts, and extends chuck service life.

Scope

This SOP applies to all journeyman machinists, setup technicians, and maintenance personnel authorized to operate manual engine lathes and CNC turning centers equipped with 3-jaw and 4-jaw independent or self-centering scroll chucks within the facility. It covers jaw removal, cleaning, replacement, and the finish-true boring/gripping operation.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOComplete Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) on the lathe's main disconnecting switch. Verify zero energy state by attempting to start the spindle.
  • PPEImpact-resistant safety glasses and cut-resistant metal mesh gloves (ANSI ISEA 105-2016 A5) are mandatory. Wear steel-toed boots when handling heavy chuck jaws or the chuck assembly itself.
  • CRUSHUse an overhead hoist or lift assist for chucks exceeding 50 lbs. Never place hands between the chuck body and the machine bed during installation. The chuck key must be immediately removed after every tightening action.

  • Chuck jaw set (matched set, verify markings)
  • Hex/Torx keys (matched to chuck bolts)
  • Brass hammer & dead-blow hammer
  • Dial test indicator (0.0005" resolution) with magnetic base
  • Boring bar (carbide insert or HSS)
  • Cutting fluid
  • Solvent degreaser and lint-free wipes
  • Torque wrench (for draw-tube if applicable)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout & Preparation: Perform LOTO on the main disconnecting switch. Remove any tooling or workpieces from the spindle. Clean the chuck face, jaws, and machine ways with solvent degreaser.
2 Jaw Removal: Rotate the scroll until the master jaw screw heads are visible. Remove the socket head cap screws securing each master jaw. Slide each jaw assembly radially outward. Critically note the jaw numbering (1, 2, 3) or positions.
3 Inspection & Cleaning: Remove the chuck from the spindle if excessive wear is visible. Clean the scroll, pinions, and master jaw serrations with solvent. Inspect for burrs, torn serrations, or chips. Stone any high spots flat.
4 Jaw Replacement: Apply a thin film of way oil to the scroll. Install the master jaws in their original numbered slots ensuring serrations mesh fully with the scroll. Install fasteners and torque to manufacturer spec (e.g., 45 ft-lbs for a 10" chuck).
5 Initial Chucking & Setup: Insert a ground test bar and tighten using the chuck key in the correct sequence. Set the indicator to read the OD near the jaws. Tap with a brass hammer until TIR is within 0.001" at the chuck face.
6 Truing the Gripping Surface: With jaws clamped, mount a boring bar in the tool post. Traverse the carriage to ensure the tool path is parallel to the spindle axis. Take a 0.010" deep cut across the gripping surface of the jaws.
7 Final Verification: Place a known workpiece of the intended material into the freshly trued jaws. Set the indicator at the OD near the jaws and 1" from the jaws. Run spindle at 300 RPM. TIR must be less than 0.003". Record reading on the PM log.
8 Release & Restore: Remove the workpiece. Thoroughly clean chips from the chuck and ways. Remove LOTO tags and restore power to the machine. Complete PM documentation.
