The purpose of this standard operating procedure is to define the exact sequence of operations for safely replacing scroll chuck jaws on a manual or CNC metalworking lathe and subsequently truing the gripping surfaces to ensure concentricity within 0.001" (0.025 mm) TIR. Adherence to this procedure prevents catastrophic workpiece ejection, reduces scrapped parts, and extends chuck service life.
This SOP applies to all journeyman machinists, setup technicians, and maintenance personnel authorized to operate manual engine lathes and CNC turning centers equipped with 3-jaw and 4-jaw independent or self-centering scroll chucks within the facility. It covers jaw removal, cleaning, replacement, and the finish-true boring/gripping operation.
- Complete Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) on the lathe's main disconnecting switch. Verify zero energy state by attempting to start the spindle.
- Impact-resistant safety glasses and cut-resistant metal mesh gloves (ANSI ISEA 105-2016 A5) are mandatory. Wear steel-toed boots when handling heavy chuck jaws or the chuck assembly itself.
- Use an overhead hoist or lift assist for chucks exceeding 50 lbs. Never place hands between the chuck body and the machine bed during installation. The chuck key must be immediately removed after every tightening action.
- Chuck jaw set (matched set, verify markings)
- Hex/Torx keys (matched to chuck bolts)
- Brass hammer & dead-blow hammer
- Dial test indicator (0.0005" resolution) with magnetic base
- Boring bar (carbide insert or HSS)
