Purpose

This procedure defines the repeatable method for changing over the profile scraper on an edgebander between production runs with differing edge material thicknesses. Proper setup eliminates adhesive buildup on the panel surface, prevents score marks, and ensures the finished edge is flush with the panel face without micro-chipping. Following this SOP reduces changeover time to under 15 minutes and maintains first-pass yield above 98 %.

Scope

Applies to all edgebanders in the production facility equipped with a pneumatically actuated profile scraper carriage (models: Homag KAL series, SCM Acciaio series, Biesse Stream series, and equivalent). Covers material thicknesses from 0.4 mm (thin PVC/ABS) up to 3.0 mm (thick acrylic/PVC). Excludes corner-rounding scraper units and manual-scrape finishing stations — those are covered under SOP-EDG-019 and SOP-EDG-022 respectively.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout the edgebander at the main disconnect before opening any blade guard or carriage assembly. Verify zero energy state using a qualified electrician per site LOTO procedure.
  • PPEWear cut-resistant (ANSI A5) gloves when handling scraper blades. Safety glasses with side shields are mandatory during the entire setup. Hearing protection (NRR 25+) required near running conveyors.
  • PINCHKeep hands clear of the scraper carriage pivot linkage while adjusting the pressure regulator. Use the manufacturer-supplied adjustment tool; never reach into the nip point.
  • EDGEScraper blades are razor-sharp on both edges. Store removed blades immediately in the dedicated blade rack with edge protectors installed. Do not place loose blades on any surface.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Hex-key set (metric, 2.5 mm – 6 mm) with T-handle driver
  • Profile scraper blade set, pre-profiled for target edge thickness (0.4–3.0 mm)
  • Torque wrench, 0.5 – 5 N·m with hex-bit adapter
  • Feeler gauge set (0.05 – 1.00 mm)

  • Panel sample offcuts (three pieces, same core and edge thickness as the production run)
  • Lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol (99 %)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout the machine. Turn the main disconnect switch to OFF and attach your personal LOTO lock and tag. Verify zero energy by pressing the start button — the machine must not energize. Only a qualified electrician may clear the LOTO.
2 Retract the scraper carriage. Open the side access door on the edgebander. Locate the manual carriage retract valve (typically a red push-button on the pneumatic manifold). Depress and hold until the scraper carriage moves fully to the service position — approximately 50 mm away from the panel path. Confirm the carriage is locked in place with the mechanical safety pin.
3 Remove the existing scraper blade. Using the hex-key set, loosen the two M6 clamp bolts that secure the blade to the carriage. Back the bolts out until they clear the blade shank. Slide the blade out of the dovetail seat. Immediately place the removed blade into the blade rack with the edge protector installed.
4 Select the correct blade for the target thickness. Refer to the edgebander blade chart or the manufacturer manual. Each blade is laser-etched with its nominal thickness range (e.g., 0.4–0.6 mm, 0.8–1.2 mm, 1.5–2.2 mm, 2.5–3.0 mm). Verify the etching matches the production order edge thickness. Use the digital calliper to measure the blade's reference edge — tolerance ±0.02 mm.
5 Clean the blade shank and clamp seat. Dampen the lint-free cloth with isopropyl alcohol. Wipe the full length of the new blade shank, removing any protective oil or debris. Clean the dovetail seat inside the carriage with the same method. Allow the alcohol to evaporate fully (approximately 30 seconds).
6 Install and torque the new blade. Insert the blade shank into the dovetail seat until the laser-etched datum mark aligns flush with the carriage face. Hand-tighten the two M6 clamp bolts. Using the torque wrench with hex-bit adapter, torque each bolt to 2.5 N·m in a crisscross pattern. Do not exceed 3.0 N·m — overtightening distorts the blade profile.
7 Set blade protrusion with a feeler gauge. Locate the guide roller directly beneath the scraper position. Select a feeler gauge equal to the target edge thickness (e.g., for 1.0 mm edge, use 1.00 mm gauge). Insert the gauge between the blade tip and the guide roller surface. Adjust the blade protrusion screw (located on the rear of the carriage) until the gauge drags with light resistance. Lock the jam nut.
8 Set the carriage contact pressure. Consult the manufacturer manual for the recommended pneumatic pressure for the selected edge material: 0.4–0.8 mm: 1.2 bar (17 psi), 1.0–2.0 mm: 1.8 bar (26 psi), 2.2–3.0 mm: 2.4 bar (35 psi). Adjust the pressure regulator on the carriage manifold to the appropriate value. Lock the regulator knob by pulling up on the locking ring.
9 Perform a dry-cycle test. Release the mechanical safety pin and close the access door. Clear the LOTO. Manually advance the carriage by momentarily jogging the machine in setup mode. Observe the blade path — it must track 0.3–0.5 mm inside the panel edge line. If the blade contacts the panel surface, stop immediately and re-check protrusion (Step 7).
10 Process a sample panel and inspect. Load one sample offcut onto the infeed conveyor. Run the panel through the edgebander at normal production speed. Retrieve the panel at the outfeed. Inspect the scraped edge under task lighting (minimum 500 lux). The edge must show no score marks, no gloss lines, no adhesive smear, and no micro-chipping larger than 0.1 mm.
11 Adjust if necessary. If gloss lines are visible (shiny stripe along the edge), reduce blade protrusion by 0.05 mm increments. If edge chipping appears, increase protrusion by 0.05 mm increments. Run a fresh sample after each adjustment. Repeat until the edge finish is uniform matte and flush with the panel face.
12 Record the setup parameters. In the machine logbook, record: date, operator name, target edge thickness, blade part number, protrusion measurement (mm), pneumatic pressure (bar), sample inspection result (pass/fail), and any adjustments made. Update the changeover tracking board on the production floor.
