Mobile Crane Daily Wire Rope and Sheave Inspection

This procedure establishes the baseline daily inspection protocol for wire rope and sheave assemblies on mobile cranes. Performing this check before each shift prevents catastrophic rope failure, extends component life, and ensures compliance with CSA Z150 and ASME B30.5 standards.

Purpose

The purpose of this standard operating procedure is to provide a repeatable, documented inspection process for wire rope and sheave systems on mobile cranes prior to each day's first lift. Early detection of broken wires, abrasion, corrosion, diameter reduction, or sheave groove wear prevents sudden load loss, dropped loads, and personnel injury. This SOP also fulfills the daily visual inspection requirement under CSA Z150-18 and ASME B30.5-2021.

Scope

This procedure applies to all mobile cranes (rough-terrain, all-terrain, truck-mounted, and crawler types) operating with wire rope hoists. It covers visual and dimensional inspection of the hoist rope, boom hoist rope, and all sheaves in the hoist and boom systems. It does not replace the manufacturer’s periodic (monthly/quarterly) inspection or any mandated nondestructive testing (e.g., magnetic rope testing). Personnel performing this inspection must hold a valid crane operator certification or be under the direct supervision of a certified operator.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLock out/tag out the crane's engine and hydraulic systems. Disconnect the battery or disable the ignition. Apply personal lock to the main disconnect switch.
  • PPEWear cut-resistant gloves, safety glasses with side shields, steel-toed boots, and a hard hat. Use a full-body harness and lanyard if inspection requires working at height (e.g., boom tip sheaves).
  • CRUSHKeep hands and fingers clear of pinch points between rope and drum or sheave. Do not reach into the drum groove while rotating the drum manually.
  • FALLWhen inspecting boom-tip sheaves, ensure the boom is fully lowered and supported. Use an approved aerial work platform or ladder rated for industrial use.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lock out/tag out the crane. Shut down the engine, apply the park brake, and engage all safety locks. Place a personal lock on the electrical disconnect or ignition. Attach a "Do Not Operate" tag. Confirm zero energy state by attempting to rotate the drum manually (should be free but without power). Verify hydraulic pressure is zero (gauges at 0 psi).
2 Visual inspection of the entire wire rope. Inspect all accessible rope sections from drum to load hook. Use the flashlight and mirror for hidden sections inside the drum groove. Look for: broken wires (1 broken wire in a strand or 6 broken wires in one rope lay length), birdcaging, kinking, crushing, abrasion, corrosion pitting, and flat spots. Record the location and type of any anomaly.
3 Measure rope diameter. Using a wire rope micrometer or caliper, measure the rope diameter at three evenly spaced points around the circumference of each full drum wrap (at least 2 wraps from the dead end). Measure at the area of greatest visible wear. Record each measurement. The rejection limit is 95% of the nominal diameter (e.g., for 12 mm rope, reject at 11.4 mm). Refer to the manufacturer's discard criteria if more restrictive.
4 Inspect sheave grooves. For each sheave (hoist and boom), use the sheave groove gauge to check groove diameter and profile. The gauge should sit flush; any rocking or gap > 1 mm indicates groove wear. Visually inspect for cracks, chips, or deformation on the groove faces and flanges. Confirm sheave side-plate alignment – no wobble when rotated slowly by hand.
5 Check sheave bearing condition. Rotate each sheave by hand through at least two full revolutions. Listen for grinding, clicking, or rough spots. Feel for excess radial or axial play. Any roughness or unusual noise requires bearing replacement before the crane returns to service. Record sheave ID and condition.
6 Clean and lubricate rope (as required). If the rope shows signs of dryness, dirt buildup, or light corrosion, apply rope lubricant per OEM schedule. Use the brush to work lubricant into the core and between strands. Do not overlubricate – wipe off excess. Remove any debris from the drum groove and sheave flanges with a rag.
7 Document findings. On the daily inspection log, record: date, crane ID, rope serial number (if available), all diameter measurements, any visual defects, sheave condition, bearing condition, lubrication performed, and operator/technician signature. If any discard criterion is met, tag the rope or sheave out of service and notify the supervisor immediately.
