Laser Distance Meter Verification
Calibration verification procedure for handheld laser distance meters used in industrial maintenance layout, alignment verification, and critical dimension checks. Ensures measurement confidence to ±1.5 mm traceability.
This procedure defines the method for verifying that a handheld laser distance meter (LDM) measures within manufacturer-stated accuracy tolerances against a certified reference standard. Regular verification ensures measurement traceability for industrial maintenance tasks such as conveyor belt alignment, equipment positioning, shaft centerline verification, and clearance gap assessments. Any LDM that fails verification must be removed from service and sent for formal recalibration or replacement.
Applies to all Class 2 and Class 3 handheld laser distance meters (red and visible green laser) used by maintenance technicians, millwrights, and reliability engineers within industrial facilities. Covers measurement ranges from 0.05 m to 100 m. Does not apply to rotary laser levels, laser scanners, or survey-grade total stations. Verification interval: every 90 days or 500 measurement cycles, whichever comes first. All results must be recorded and retained for the life of the instrument.
- Do not stare into the laser aperture or direct the beam at reflective surfaces at close range. Class 2 lasers emit visible light but can cause eye injury if viewed directly for extended periods. Post warning signage at the verification station.
- Wear safety glasses with side shields rated for laser wavelength (630–680 nm). Use non-slip footwear when working on uneven shop floors. Secure the tripod to prevent tipping.
- Ensure the verification area is clear of moving machinery. Lockout/tagout any overhead cranes or automated guided vehicles within 10 m of the test range before setting up the reference tape measure.
- Handle the laser meter and reference tape with ESD precautions if working in classified hazardous areas (explosive dust or vapour). Use grounded mats and wrist straps.
- Certified reference tape measure (Class I, 30 m minimum) with current calibration certificate traceable to NIST or NRC
- Laser distance meter under test, with fully charged batteries (≥80% capacity)
- Ambient thermometer with ±0.5°C resolution
- Barometric pressure gauge (±1 hPa resolution)
- Target plate — matte white, 200 mm × 200 mm minimum, perpendicularity within ±2°
- Heavy-duty tripod or rigid mounting platform with bubble level
- Lint-free optical-grade cleaning cloth
- Calibration log sheet (paper) or ServiceGrid digital log form
- Pen or tablet for data entry
