Moulder Feed Chain Tension And Lubrication
This PM procedure outlines the critical steps and safety protocols for maintaining the feed chain system on industrial moulders. Correct tension and lubrication are vital for preventing costly downtime, ensuring consistent workpiece feed, and maximizing the lifespan of chains and sprockets.
The purpose of this procedure is to establish the standard steps for inspecting, tensioning, and lubricating the feed chains on a moulder. Correct chain tension prevents slippage, uneven feed, and premature wear of sprockets and chain links. Proper lubrication reduces friction, heat buildup, and corrosion, ensuring consistent product quality and maximizing component service life.
This SOP applies to all industrial moulders (e.g., Weinig, SCM, Wadkin) equipped with feed chain systems in the production facility. It covers the primary feed bed chains responsible for workpiece transport through the cutterhead section. This task should be performed weekly or every 40 hours of run time.
- Follow established Lockout/Tagout procedure. Isolate the moulder's main electrical disconnect and verify zero energy state before any physical interaction with the feed chain mechanism.
- Wear cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A5 or higher) and safety glasses. Watch for sharp edges on chain links and sprockets. Do not wear loose-fitting clothing or jewelry near moving parts.
- Keep hands clear of chain tracks and sprocket engagement zones during manual rotation of the feed bed.
- Use approved chain lubricants only. Refer to the moulder manufacturer's specifications. Avoid overspray onto electrical components or pneumatic lines.
- Chain tension gauge (or tape measure/straight edge)
- Feeler gauge set
- Manufacturer-approved chain lubricant (e.g., ISO 68 or 100 food-grade / extreme-pressure oil)
- Stiff brush (nylon or brass wire)
- Clean lint-free rags
- Pump oiler or spray applicator
- Calibrated torque wrench (if adjusting sprocket bolts)
- Lockout/Tagout kit (padlock, hasp, tag)
- Equipment manual (for specific tension specifications)
