Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to establish the standard steps for inspecting, tensioning, and lubricating the feed chains on a moulder. Correct chain tension prevents slippage, uneven feed, and premature wear of sprockets and chain links. Proper lubrication reduces friction, heat buildup, and corrosion, ensuring consistent product quality and maximizing component service life.

Scope

This SOP applies to all industrial moulders (e.g., Weinig, SCM, Wadkin) equipped with feed chain systems in the production facility. It covers the primary feed bed chains responsible for workpiece transport through the cutterhead section. This task should be performed weekly or every 40 hours of run time.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOFollow established Lockout/Tagout procedure. Isolate the moulder's main electrical disconnect and verify zero energy state before any physical interaction with the feed chain mechanism.
  • PPEWear cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A5 or higher) and safety glasses. Watch for sharp edges on chain links and sprockets. Do not wear loose-fitting clothing or jewelry near moving parts.
  • PINCHKeep hands clear of chain tracks and sprocket engagement zones during manual rotation of the feed bed.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout: Shut down the moulder using the normal stop procedure. Open the main disconnect switch, attach a personal padlock and tag. Verify zero energy by attempting to start the machine.
2 Gain Access: Remove the feed bed covers and/or chain guards using the appropriate tools. Store fasteners safely in a designated container.
3 Clean Chains: Use a stiff nylon or brass wire brush and lint-free rags to remove all built-up pitch, sawdust, and old lubricant from the exposed chain length and sprocket teeth.
4 Inspect Chains & Sprockets: Visually examine chain links for elongation, cracked sidebars, seized pins, or worn rollers. Check sprockets for hooked teeth or uneven wear patterns. Replace any worn components immediately.
5 Measure Chain Sag/Tension: Locate the longest unsupported span of the feed chain. Measure the vertical sag or use a tension gauge. Refer to the equipment manual for the exact deflection force (e.g., 1/4 inch sag at midpoint under a 5 lb load). Adjust tension bolts symmetrically to achieve specification.
6 Check Chain Tracking: Rotate the feed bed manually to check for lateral chain wander. Adjust tracking cam bolts or side guides if the chain rides off-centre on the sprocket face.
7 Lubricate Chains: Apply the manufacturer-recommended chain lubricant evenly to the top and side surfaces of the chain links along the entire loop. Focus on the pin and bushing clearances using a pump oiler for precision application to minimize waste and overspray.
8 Operate & Re-check: Remove LOTO, re-energize the machine, and reinstall all guards. Run the feed bed at operating speed without stock. Listen for knocking or clicking sounds. Re-check tension after 10 minutes of runtime.
9 Document PM Log: Record the date, chain tension measurements, lubricant type used, and any parts replaced in the ServiceGrid CMMS. Flag any required follow-up actions.
