Moulder Feed Speed vs. Knife Marks Reference Chart
Operator-facing reference and inspection log for verifying moulder feed speed settings against knife mark count per inch (KPI). Includes pass/fail criteria, cutterhead RPM tolerances, feed roll pressure checks, and corrective action tracking. Use this chart to dial in surface finish quality and avoid ripple or washboarding.
Knife marks per inch (KPI) is the single most important indicator of moulder surface finish quality. This reference chart maps feed speed (ft/min) against cutterhead RPM and number of knives to give operators a quick-lookup target zone for acceptable KPI. The accompanying inspection log provides a structured pass/fail audit of actual vs. calculated KPI, feed roll pressure, knife projection, and vibration levels. Use this log to catch drift early, reduce scrap, and keep your moulder running at peak finish quality.
Formula: KPI = (Cutterhead RPM × Number of Knives) ÷ (Feed Speed in inches per minute). Target range: 8–14 KPI for most moulding profiles; consult manufacturer spec for your specific head.
- Lockout/tagout required before any knife adjustment, gauge check, or cleaning. Follow facility LOTO procedure per CSA Z460.
- Non-contact tachometer (e.g., optical or laser) for cutterhead RPM verification. Handheld feed-speed encoder or marked timing belt for ft/min readout.
- Knife projection gauge (dial indicator or digital). Feed roll pressure test strip or pin gauge. Vibration pen or accelerometer for bearing/housing check.
- Hearing protection (min. 24 dB NRR), safety glasses with side shields, steel-toed boots, no loose clothing or gloves near rotating heads.
Inspection / Log Matrix — Feed Speed vs. Knife Marks
| Status (P/F) | Inspection Item / Task | Tolerance / Threshold | Actual Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| [ ] Pass [ ] Fail | Feed speed — encoder or timed belt check | Setpoint ± 3 ft/min (or ± 1 m/min) | ________ ft/min |
| [ ] Pass [ ] Fail | Cutterhead RPM — non-contact tachometer | Setpoint ± 50 RPM | ________ RPM |
| [ ] Pass [ ] Fail | Calculated knife marks per inch (KPI) | 8–14 KPI (or per mfr. spec) | ________ KPI |
| [ ] Pass [ ] Fail | Knife projection — all knives within tolerance | ± 0.002″ (0.05 mm) of master setting | ________ in |
| [ ] Pass [ ] Fail | Feed roll pressure — pin gauge or strip test | 40–60 psi (276–414 kPa) per roll | ________ psi |
| [ ] Pass [ ] Fail | Vibration — cutterhead bearing housing | < 0.15 in/s (4 mm/s) RMS | ________ in/s |
| [ ] Pass [ ] Fail | Knife count — actual knives installed vs. spec | Match head spec (e.g., 4, 6, or 8 knives) | ________ knives |
| [ ] Pass [ ] Fail | Stock material moisture content | 6–9 % MC for clear finish | ________ % MC |
KPI formula: (RPM × # knives) ÷ (feed speed in in/min). Convert ft/min to in/min by multiplying by 12.
