Purpose

To provide a standardized procedure for safely performing hydraulic system maintenance and lockout/tagout (LOTO) on commercial trash compactors. This procedure prevents accidental energisation, hydraulic fluid leaks, and injury to personnel during service operations.

Scope

This SOP applies to all hydraulic models of commercial trash compactors—stationary and self-contained—in use at the facility. It covers hydraulic fluid replacement, filter changes, hose and fitting inspection/replacement, and associated LOTO procedures. It does not cover electrical motor replacement or structural repairs.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOPerform lockout/tagout on the main electrical disconnect and hydraulic power unit. Verify zero energy state before proceeding.
  • PPEWear safety glasses, hydraulic-resistant gloves, steel-toed boots, and coveralls. Use face shield when draining or pressurising.
  • FLUIDUse only the hydraulic fluid specified by the manufacturer. Avoid skin contact—use drip trays and absorbent pads.
  • PRESRelieve all residual hydraulic pressure before opening any line or fitting. Pressure can remain trapped even with power off.
  • LIFTUse appropriate lifting equipment (hoist, jack, or lift truck) for heavy components such as the hydraulic pump or reservoir.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1Notify all personnel in the vicinity and place an "Out of Service" sign on the compactor controls.
2Isolate electrical power by turning off the main disconnect switch. Apply lockout/tagout per facility LOTO policy.
3Verify zero energy state: attempt to start the compactor using normal controls—confirm no movement or electrical activity.
4Relieve hydraulic pressure by activating the manual pressure release valve or slowly cracking a fitting (use PPE and drip tray).
5Place an approved drain pan under the reservoir drain plug. Remove plug and drain all hydraulic fluid. Dispose of waste oil per local regulations.
6Remove old hydraulic filters, clean mounting surfaces, and install new filters per manufacturer torque specifications.
7Visually inspect all hydraulic hoses and fittings for wear, cracking, or leaking. Replace any compromised assemblies—torque to spec.
8Reinstall drain plug. Refill hydraulic reservoir to the correct level using the specified fluid through a clean funnel.
9Prime the system and purge trapped air by manually cycling the compactor full stroke (if safe) or using the air purge valve.
10Check for leaks, verify system pressure with gauge, run a full automatic cycle to confirm proper operation. Remove LOTO and tag when complete.
