Purpose

To establish a standardized method for replacing loaded paint arrestor exhaust filters and verifying the booth's static pressure differential using a digital manometer or Magnehelic gauge. Adherence to this procedure ensures the exhaust system maintains the required containment velocity (typically 100 fpm minimum for crossdraft booths per NFPA 33) and prevents hazardous particulate accumulation in the plenum.

Observation of design static pressure limits prevents motor overload conditions and ensures the fan is operating on the correct section of its performance curve. All recorded data must be signed off by the Maintenance Supervisor and entered into the CMMS within the shift.

Scope

Applies to all crossdraft, downdraft, and semi-downdraft industrial paint booths within the facility operating with dry particulate arrestors. Excludes booths equipped with water wash or electrostatic precipitation systems. All maintenance personnel performing this task must have completed the confined space entry (CSE) awareness module and the authorized LOTO provider certification.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOPerform Lockout/Tagout on the exhaust fan disconnect switch upstream of the motor starter. Apply a group lockout if multiple technicians are servicing the booth. Verify zero energy state phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground with a calibrated voltmeter.
  • PPEFull paint booth entry requires a Tyvek suit, nitrile gloves, and a properly fitted half-face respirator with P100 organic vapour cartridges. Safety glasses with side shields are mandatory. Ensure respirator seal check prior to entering the contaminated plenum.
  • FIRECollected paint overspray and saturated filters are classified as Class I flammable solids. Place used filters directly into a labeled, covered steel waste drum immediately upon removal. Do not allow accumulation on the booth floor. No spark-producing tools or hot work within 10 m of the booth enclosure.
  • CSEIf the exhaust plenum or filter access chamber exceeds 4 ft in depth, it must be treated as a permit-required confined space. An authorized attendant must be present at the entry point. Continuous Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) monitoring is required during the entire plenum inspection phase.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Replacement paint arrestor filters — primary (pre-filter) and secondary (final). Ensure minimum MERV 8 or ASHRAE 45% arrestance.
  • Digital manometer (Dwyer 477A or equivalent) or Magnehelic gauge (0–5" w.c.) with static pressure tips.
  • T25 Torx driver or 11mm nut driver (depending on filter frame retainer hardware).
  • LOTO kit: padlock, hasp, danger tag, and group LOTO log sheet.
  • Industrial vacuum cleaner with Class H HEPA filtration for plenum debris removal.
  • White lithium grease or similar anti-seize lubricant for access door hinge pins and latch mechanisms.
  • Tyvek coveralls, nitrile gloves, P100 organic vapour cartridge respirator.
  • Fire-rated steel waste drum with lid for disposal of saturated media.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 System Shutdown & LOTO: Notify production control of the scheduled PM. Navigate to the exhaust fan disconnect switch. Apply LOTO per site standard. Verify zero voltage phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground using a calibrated phase rotation meter. Confirm the fan cannot be re-energized remotely.
2 Pre-Replacement Draft Reading: Locate the static pressure test ports. Connect the manometer high-pressure port to the upstream tap (booth interior) and the low-pressure port to the downstream tap (exhaust plenum). Record the initial static pressure drop on the PM log. If reading exceeds 125% of the design maximum, the filter bank is severely loaded and poses a fire risk.
3 Retainer Frame Removal: Unlatch or unscrew the filter frame retainer clips or swing bolts. Carefully lower the access door or hinged frame. Support the door weight manually—loaded filters can shift abruptly and cause pinch-point injuries.
4 Filter Bank Extraction: Grip the primary (pre-) filter firmly and slide it out of the channel. Follow with the secondary (final) filter. Note the orientation arrows on the frame—do not reverse them during reinstallation. Place both directly into the fire-rated waste drum.
5 Plenum Inspection & Cleanup: Using a high-intensity inspection light, examine the interior of the exhaust plenum for visible overspray accumulation, cracked sealant, or deteriorated gaskets. Vacuum all loose debris with the Class H HEPA vacuum. Check spark arrestor screens for blockage if applicable.
6 New Filter Installation: Install new secondary filters first, followed by primary filters. Ensure the airflow direction arrows point toward the exhaust stack. Re-engage all retainer clips or torque the swing bolts to the manufacturer’s specification. Lubricate hinge pins with white lithium grease.
7 Post-Replacement Draft Reading: Reattach the manometer. Seal all access doors and latches. Clear LOTO tags (one person, one key, one lock procedure). Re-energize the fan in hand mode. Record the new static pressure drop. Confirm it is within the operating range specified on the booth schematic (typically 0.5–1.5" w.c.). A significantly lower reading may indicate a bypass or damaged media; a higher reading suggests excessive restriction.
8 System Return & Documentation: Return the booth to automatic mode. Complete the PM log sheet: initial pressure, final pressure, filter lot numbers, and technician ID. Dispose of all PPE in general waste. Upload the signed log to ServiceGrid before the end of the shift.
