Purpose

This procedure defines the acceptance criteria and step-by-step method for testing the brake assembly on a wide belt sander rated for 25–50 HP. The test ensures the brake can bring the rotating drum to a complete stop within 1.2 seconds from 80% of maximum belt speed, in accordance with CSA Z432 machinery safeguarding requirements and manufacturer specifications. The test also validates brake pad wear limits, disc runout, and thermal stability.

Scope

Applies to all wide belt sanders in production with pneumatically actuated caliper disc brakes. Covers visual inspection, air gap measurement, caliper alignment (TIR), functional stop time verification, and post-test temperature monitoring. Does not cover hydraulic brake systems or drum-style brakes. The test must be performed quarterly or whenever brake drag, increased stopping distance, or audible squeal is reported.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOComplete lockout/tagout on both electrical disconnect (480 V / 600 V) and pneumatic supply (90 psi) before removing any guards or accessing the brake assembly.
  • PPEWear cut-resistant gloves when handling brake pads; use safety glasses and hearing protection during functional run test.
  • BURNDisc surface may be up to 80 °C after multiple stop tests. Allow cooling period of 10 minutes between thermal test cycles.
  • NIPKeep loose clothing, hair, and tools clear of rotating drum and belt during test phase. Only one technician may operate the start/stop controls.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Digital torque wrench (0–80 N·m)
  • Feeler gauge set (0.05–1.00 mm)
  • Dial indicator with magnetic base
  • Thermocouple or infrared thermometer (contact preferred)
  • Calibrated test weight (5 kg) for load simulation
  • Lockout/tagout kit with hasps and padlocks
  • Brake pad replacement kit (if inspection fails)
  • High-temp anti-seize compound (copper-based)
  • Isopropyl alcohol 99% and lint-free rags

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout and Prepare Machine — Isolate electrical and pneumatic supplies. Apply LOTO. Remove belt guard covers. Clean brake access area with isopropyl alcohol and rags.
2 Visual Inspection of Brake Assembly — Check brake pad thickness. Minimum acceptable: 3.2 mm. Inspect disc for scoring deeper than 0.25 mm, visible cracks, or runout. Ensure all mounting fasteners are present and torqued to 55 N·m (range 50–60 N·m).
3 Measure Brake Air Gap — Insert feeler gauge between pad and disc at three equidistant points around the disc. Acceptable gap range: 0.20–0.40 mm. Record maximum and minimum readings in PM log.
4 Check Caliper Alignment (TIR) — Mount dial indicator on caliper body, plunger perpendicular to disc face. Zero indicator. Rotate disc one full turn. Total indicated runout must not exceed 0.10 mm. If exceeded, shim or reposition caliper.
5 Functional Stop Test — Re-energize machine per safety protocol. Set belt speed to 80% of maximum rated RPM. Engage emergency stop or brake actuator. Measure time from activation to complete drum stop using a stopwatch. Acceptable: ≤ 1.2 seconds. Repeat three times, record average.
6 Thermal Check After Stops — Immediately after the third stop, measure disc temperature at the brake contact zone. Temperature rise must not exceed 45 °C above ambient. If exceeded, inspect for dragging pads, insufficient air gap, or worn bearings.
7 Reseat, Torque, and Document — Reinstall all guards and covers. Torque guard bolts to 22 N·m. Fill out PM log with: air gap readings, TIR value, stopping time averages, disc temperature. Flag any out-of-spec values for corrective work order. Remove LOTO and return machine to production once cleared.
