Purpose

To define a standardized, repeatable procedure for measuring, evaluating, and correcting the flatness of glued-up panels immediately after they exit the press. A panel that is within flatness tolerance reduces reject rates, prevents jams in downstream CNC routers and sanders, and ensures glue-line integrity across the entire lamination. This SOP establishes acceptance criteria (≤ 0.015″ per 12″ span), measurement grid methodology, corrective action thresholds, and documentation requirements for every panel produced.

Scope

This procedure covers all laminated, veneered, and solid-wood glue-up panels processed through any cold press, hot press, or clamp carrier in the facility — including plywood panels, LVL billets, engineered-wood corestock, and solid-wood edge-glued panels. Panel dimensions range from 24″ × 24″ (minimum) to 60″ × 120″ (maximum) with thicknesses from ¾″ to 2¼″. Applicable to every press cycle, end-of-shift quality checks, and re-press corrections. Operators, quality inspectors, and maintenance personnel are expected to follow this SOP for every panel produced.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout the press at the main disconnect before cleaning platens, adjusting hydraulic stops, or performing any maintenance on the press itself. Verify zero energy with a qualified electrician before reaching into the press opening.
  • PPEWear cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A4 or higher) when handling panels with sharp edges. Safety glasses with side shields mandatory. Steel-toed boots with slip-resistant soles required on the press floor.
  • LIFTPanels over 40 lb must be moved with a mechanical lift assist (vacuum lifter, clamp cart, or hoist). Two-person carry for any panel exceeding 48″ in length — never lift alone.
  • DUSTWhen hand-sanding flatness corrections, wear an N95 respirator and connect a HEPA dust extractor to the sanding block. Do not dry-sweep — use a damp mop or HEPA vacuum for cleanup.
  • HOTFor hot-press panels, wait until surface temperature drops below 40 °C (measured by IR thermometer) before handling or gauging. Use heat-resistant gloves if the panel is still warm.

  • Precision straightedge (48″ or 60″, ground steel, ±0.001″/ft)
  • Feeler gauge set (0.001″–0.060″)
  • Dial indicator with magnetic base (0.001″ resolution)
  • Digital caliper (6″, ±0.001″)
  • Marking pencil or chalk (white or yellow for contrast)
  • Panel vacuum lifter or clamp cart (capacity ≥ 500 lb)
  • Sanding block with 80- and 120-grit PSA discs
  • Wood shims (0.005″, 0.010″, 0.020″ thicknesses, 2″ × 6″)
  • Moisture meter (pin-type, for checking substrate moisture)
  • Infrared thermometer (non-contact, ±1.5 °C accuracy)
  • Flatness gauge or taut wire setup (optional for large panels)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Equalize and temperature-check. Allow the panel to rest for a minimum of 30 minutes after the press opens — this lets internal stresses and moisture gradients stabilize. Using the IR thermometer, measure surface temperature at four corners and the center. All readings must be below 40 °C before proceeding. If any reading exceeds 40 °C, wait 10 additional minutes and recheck.
2 Set up the inspection surface. Place the panel on a clean, level granite inspection table or on three dedicated urethane-capped support points that create a stable three-point plane. Ensure no debris, adhesive blobs, or loose veneer fragments are trapped under the panel. Wipe the panel top surface with a dry lint-free cloth to remove squeeze-out and dust.
3 Establish the measurement grid. Using chalk, mark nine gauge points on the panel surface: three evenly spaced across the width (6″ from top edge, centerline, 6″ from bottom edge) and three evenly spaced across the length (6″ from left, center, 6″ from right) — a 3×3 grid. This catches localized cupping, bowing, and twist.
4 Measure width-direction flatness. Lay the precision straightedge across the panel width at each of the three width positions. At each position, slide the feeler gauge under the straightedge at the point of maximum gap. Record the gap value. The panel is acceptable if all gaps are ≤ 0.015″. Mark any high spot with chalk.
5 Measure length-direction flatness. Repeat the same procedure along the panel length at each of the four length positions (6″ from left, left-center, right-center, 6″ from right). Record all gap values. If any gap exceeds 0.015″ in a 12″ span or the overall deviation across the full panel exceeds 0.030″, the panel fails and requires corrective action.
6 Evaluate and classify deviation. If all gaps are ≤ 0.015″ at every gauge point, stamp the panel with a PASS mark and move to downstream processing. If gaps are between 0.015″ and 0.045″ (localized high spots), proceed to Step 7 (hand-sanding correction). If overall cupping or bowing exceeds 0.045″ across the full panel, proceed to Step 8 (re-press with shims).
7 Correct localized high spots (0.015″–0.045″). Fit the sanding block with 80-grit PSA disc. Sand the chalk-marked high area using light, even pressure in a figure-eight pattern — do not dwell in one spot. After every 5 passes, wipe the area clean and recheck with the straightedge and feeler gauge. When the gap drops below 0.010″, switch to 120-grit for a final pass. Recheck all nine grid points.
8 Correct overall cupping/bowing (> 0.045″). Identify the low side(s) of the panel. Cut wood shims slightly longer than the low area and insert them between the panel and the press platen on the low side — use the thinnest shim that brings the panel within 0.015″. Re-press at 75 % of the original pressing pressure for 20 minutes. Remove from press, equalize 15 minutes, and re-measure the full grid.
9 Final measurement and documentation. Once correction is complete (or if the panel passed initially), re-measure all nine grid points one final time. Record the following in the PM log or quality sheet: date, inspector initials, panel ID, press cycle number, initial maximum gap, corrective action taken (if any), and final maximum gap. All final gaps must be ≤ 0.015″ per 12″ span.
10 Stamp, tag, and release. Using a date stamp or permanent marker, mark the panel with the inspection date, inspector initials, and a PASS symbol. If the panel required correction, also mark the correction code (e.g., "HS" for hand-sand, "RP" for re-press). Transfer the panel to the next work center (CNC routing, edgebanding, or sanding). File the PM log sheet in the shift binder.
