Purpose

The purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to establish a consistent, verifiable method for capturing and storing all operational parameters from the servo drives on a CNC router. This ensures that in the event of a drive fault, failure, or component replacement, the machine can be returned to its baseline operational state with minimal downtime and without reliance on machine tool builder recall or proprietary software locks. A verified backup eliminates the need for manual servo tuning from scratch, reducing scrap and cycle time deviation.

This SOP applies to all industrial CNC routers under the maintenance responsibility of the [Facility Name] maintenance team, specifically those equipped with digital servo drives (e.g., Yaskawa Sigma-7/5, Siemens S120, Allen-Bradley Kinetix 5700, Delta ASDA-A2). Safety Precautions

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Pre-Backup Verification & Safety Lockout: Perform LOTO on the main machine disconnect. Open the control cabinet. Using a DMM, verify zero AC/DC voltage at the servo drive power terminals (L1, L2, L3, DC Bus). Record drive make, model, and firmware version from the nameplate. Re-energize the cabinet if a live upload is required, ensuring appropriate Arc Flash PPE and ESD precautions are in place.
2 Establish Communication Link: Connect the industrial laptop to the servo drive's CN3 or PG interface using the appropriate USB Type-B or RS-232 cable. Launch the OEM drive software. Navigate to the 'Connection' tab, select the correct COM port, and set the baud rate to 115200 bps (or as specified by the drive manual). Click 'Connect' and verify the drive model is correctly identified.
3 Upload Parameters from Drive to Software: In the software toolbar, select 'Upload (Drive -> PC)'. Monitor the progress bar carefully; do not interrupt the communication or cycle power to the drive during upload. Once complete, compare the total parameter count displayed in the software against the drive's factory data sheet to ensure a full capture.
4 Parameter Verification & Annotation: Scroll through the uploaded parameter list. Identify and annotate any parameters that deviate from factory defaults, such as custom gear ratios, acceleration/deceleration ramps, torque limits, and electronic gearing values. Take screenshots of these custom settings for the maintenance log.
5 Export and Archive Backup File: Click 'Save As' and select the native backup format (e.g., .PRM, .ACF, .XML). Name the file using the strict convention: [MachineID]_[DriveModel]_[YYYYMMDD].bak. Save the file to the laptop's local drive. Immediately upload a copy to the secure network share at \\plant-ops\drive_backups\ or an equivalent backup location.
6 Disconnection and Restoration: Close the OEM software. Disconnect the communication cable from the drive and laptop. Securely close the control cabinet door. Remove LOTO tags and re-energize the machine. Perform a full machine dry-run cycle to confirm the drives operate without alarms and the machine returns to normal production readiness.
